Every year I’d watch the @nycmarathon and leave inspired, telling myself “I’m doing it this year.” Then a few days would pass and I’d forget about it. Honestly, the thought of training bored me. I hate running long distances. The last time I could really say I ran is when I was in @xavierhs from 1996 to 2000, and even then I only ran to stay fit for my real event, the high hurdles. Running in a straight line or around a track wasn’t for me. Since then I could probably count my runs on two hands.
Fast forward to a few weeks ago, I got a call from my good friend @gwgoldring at @mastercard. “You interested in running the marathon?” I said yea, but that means I have to start training now, we’re 14 weeks out. He said you’ll get a call from the team in a few days. Then I got the call saying we have a bib for you if you accept the challenge, to which I accepted.
Since that call in late July, I can honestly say I’ve fallen in love with running for the first time in my life. I’m out there 3 to 4 times a week, hitting distances I never thought possible thanks to my coach @runningwithjane. I had a solid base going in from training at my gym @badassacademy with my strength coach @iamanthonyespo, doing HIIT classes 5 to 6 times a week. But this is different.
Training has changed my mindset completely. I run @parkavenueinternational, our second-generation family factory on 29th Street where we produce our labels @madebyalex, @pietro.nyc and @anybagproject. My father started it in 1982, and I know first hand what it means to put in the work. But this challenge has me believing there’s nothing I can’t do. The confidence and determination I’ve built these past weeks has me feeling unstoppable.
Now I’m 6 weeks out from something I thought was impossible. It’s my turn to be the runner I’ve always admired, coming off the Verrazzano, turning the corner, and hearing the roar of the crowd behind the police line. I get chills every time I think about it.
I can’t thank Mastercard enough for this opportunity. This is what you call a priceless moment.
