For me, art is not just about looking or trying to understand what someone else has created. It’s about connection. That moment when something resonates with you and makes you want to respond, imagine and create something of your own.

During my time at the Venice Biennale, I came across works and spaces that inspired me in different ways. Some challenged my perspective, while others sparked my imagination and made me want to become part of the experience.

Hong Kong’s pavilion was one of those places. The stillness, shifting light, shadows and sounds inspired me to imagine my own stories and spontaneously create my own interpretation of the space.

Venice welcomed us with rain: persistent, almost theatrical, as if the city itself wanted to set the tone for what was to come. We began with Peggy Guggenheim, which felt almost symbolic for a journey centred around collecting. She had the rare courage to trust her own vision, to recognise something before it had been recognised by others and to build a collection that still carries the intimacy of her gaze.

That idea stayed with me throughout the day: what does it mean to collect? Perhaps it is not simply about possessing beautiful things, but about following an instinct, creating connections, and allowing certain works to become part of your own inner landscape.

Homo Faber in Città offered another perspective on that world. The relationship between objects, craftsmanship and the life that surrounds them. And across the different exhibitions, from Lorna Simpson to Akhunov, Chihuly and the Pinault Collection, Venice kept opening one visual language after another.
But Michael Armitage was different.
Something in his work reached me beyond the immediate encounter. It stayed somewhere between image, memory and emotion. The kind of encounter that continues quietly long after you have left the room.

Of everything I experienced during these six days, he became my most profound discovery, my little jewel of the journey.I want to give his work the space it deserves, so I’ll tell you more about that encounter in another post.

And perhaps this is what makes a journey around art so extraordinary: not only what you see, but what begins to move inside you and the people with whom you get to experience it.

Venice met me with sun, bright colours, water, shadows and light. And then, a completely different kind of beauty at Fondazione Prada.
Heavy. Uncomfortable. Almost physical.
Not something I loved.
Something I couldn’t stop thinking about.

The first day of a trip that already felt unforgettable ending with meeting the beautiful people I was going to share it all with.

Самому или с проводником? Как смотреть Биеннале в Венеции 🧐

К Биеннале можно подготовиться самостоятельно. Купить билет, скачать карту, сохранить десятки проектов, прочитать обзоры и составить маршрут.
Сложность обычно начинается уже на месте. Информации слишком много, расстояния между точками больше, чем кажутся на карте, а после нескольких часов просмотра внимание работает совсем иначе, чем утром.
В такой ситуации легко начать заходить в павильоны по принципу «раз уж дошли, надо посмотреть».

Работа хорошего проводника начинается с отбора. Что действительно стоит включить в маршрут? В какой последовательности это смотреть? Где нужен исторический или политический контекст? А где лучше сначала дать человеку время самому рассмотреть работу и составить своё мнение?

Важен ритм. После сильного павильона иногда стоит остановиться и поговорить. В другом случае полезно увидеть два проекта подряд, потому что между ними возникает интересная связь. Такой маршрут невозможно собрать по рейтингу лучших павильонов. (продолжение в первом комментарии)
