At the Cannes Film Festival, Palestinian director Rakan Mayasi discussed the making of his debut feature, 'Yesterday the Eye Didn’t Sleep', which premiered in the Un Certain Regard competition. Set in Lebanon’s Bekaa Valley, the film follows two Bedouin sisters, Rim and Jahawer, as they navigate patriarchal rituals and inherited traditions.

Shot without a script and featuring a cast of non-professional actors, the film marks Mayasi’s first feature after a series of acclaimed shorts, including 'Roubama', which was selected for the Locarno Film Festival in 2012, and 'Bonboné', which premiered at the Toronto International Film Festival in 2017.

Speaking with CairoScene, Mayasi reflects on the process of making the film, working with non-professional actors, and how his grandmother’s story and relationship profoundly inspired and shaped the project.
