THE DIVERSE BASELINE 📓 last year, i created a lengthy list of a bunch of bookish challenges that i planned on participating in— but i’ll be honest, i completely lost track of the list itself and ended up not even writing down the parameters for most of the challenges! i think i might’ve been a bit too ambitious by selecting 5+ challenges to try; to my credit, i did also change jobs and move across the country, so i’m not too mad about it. plus, it’s helped me figure out what i’m looking for when it comes to book challenges— on my page, i’m prioritizing a balance of both fiction and nonfiction, and i want to read globally to expand my knowledge and cultural awareness. i’ve made great strides on these goals overall, but there’s always more work to be done! so for this year, i’ve decided to devote my time to one challenge: THE DIVERSE BASELINE! TDB is in its 3rd year, hosted by some of my favorite folks on bookstagram— each month, there are 3 prompts to fulfill, and all books must be written by racialized authors (aka authors who descend from the global majority, and who cannot access white privilege in the US where i’m based). the prompts are wide-reaching and intriguing, including a focus on sports, religious representation, familial structures, and so much more. i’ve already picked out the books i’m reading for January’s prompts, and it works out perfectly because they were all on my endless TBR already! “The World of Queer Stories: A jigsaw celebrating LGBTQ+ literary icons” by @laurencekingpub with artwork by Anshika Khullar @aorists 1000 pieces. As always, “The World Of” puzzles from Laurence King Publishing are both beautiful illustrations to puzzle but also incredibly informative. I learned a lot from the deep dive write up about the image that is always on the back side of the reference poster. I, unfortunately, hadn’t heard of many of the people depicted before and now I have! I think this is why I love the World Of series so much- I truly learn something while puzzling. Even when I am very familiar with the theme, like the Dracula offering, there is always something I didn’t know that is mentioned. The illustration of this puzzle is by Anshika Khullar, who is an Indian non-binary transgender illustrator I had never heard of before. It’s a very cool image packed with lots to puzzle. I’m glad to see Laurence King Publishing chose them as I also got to experience a new to me artist.
