It’s hard to believe it’s just over a month from the opening of the inaugural edition of @canartibiza which will take place on Ibiza 13-17.7.2022!!! The whole thing still feels like a half dreaming / half tripping situation, but is turning more real by the hour. And one of the thing (besides people excitedly letting us know they’re coming over), is getting the peek into artists studios as they’re working on their pieces. Here is a little selection of the few recent ones I got to have an early peek at (both exclusively and/or publicly via IG)

“I tried to build something beautiful in response to something very tragic.” —Zeid El-Amine, founder, Août Gallery (@aoutgallery)

Août Gallery founder Zeid El-Amine never planned to open his gallery in Beirut. But when catastrophic explosions rocked the Lebanese city on August 4, 2020, killing more than 200 and injuring more than 7,000 others, El-Amine had a change of heart. Among the victims of the tragic event was El-Amine’s father, Iyad El-Amine, a civil engineer who resided in the neighborhood of Gemmayzeh, a cultural hub close to the port.

The 25-year-old began building Août Gallery from the ground up, opening it in March 2021. The name Août (August in French) has a dual meaning: a tribute to his father, it also suggests the traditional month of closure and healing.

Now, in partnership with Artnet’s Buy Now platform, Août Gallery is presenting a selection of 13 stunning paintings by eight artists from around the world—click the link in our bio to explore all the available works.

I wonder which is harder to cling to?

I have always been an optimist, so ‘hope’ is intrinsic to my vocabulary. But, I’d be lying if I said it’s been easy lately — far from it. We are surrounded by things to make us feel hopeless, from cold showers (due to lack of electricity) to being told there’s no bread or petrol in the market.

However, as Lebanon heads to the polls tomorrow, I have some hope in my heart. I’m hopeful for the small changes I believe are possible. Whilst we won’t be witnessing massive, miraculous leaps towards prosperity anytime soon, whatever progress we do make will satisfy our exhausted souls, reminding us that glimmers of good things are on the horizon.
