Celebrating my one year training anniversary at @garthtaylorjj today! Though this past year has had plenty of ups and downs like any other, this school and community have been pivotal in helping me fall in love with jiu jitsu and martial arts again. I’ve met a ton of new friends, learned many new techniques and refreshed old ones (after a long time off training), hit several new weightlifting PRs, and even won my first ever gold medal at this school! I’m also so happy with the women’s team here, especially @elena_clairee for leading our monthly women’s open mat along with the coaching and mentorship of so many amazing women and men! I brought a few gifts to the school today as a token of my appreciation which are listed on the whiteboard currently as well as on the final slide of this post. They are for everyone, so if you train here, they are yours to enjoy as well. See you on the mats!

2025 Recap Part 1 (January - April):

January: Took a Tomahawk and Knife class at the @swordfightingschool, attended the @morrobaybirdfestival for the first time, and hosted a Burns Night party honoring Scotland’s National Poet, Robert Burns. Also got my first great kilt from @usakilts and learned how to fold it, and left my chaperone role with the @oneillseaodyssey to focus more on the state parks.

February: Attended a class on the Natural History of the UCSC Campus, which I found fascinating and taught me a lot more details about our local ecosystems, which was very helpful to me with the parks. Did a lot of crafts this month, including blacksmithing at @wilder_ranch_state_park, heavily modifying my patchwork backpack, and completing a woven water bottle holder that I’d been working on for some time.

March: Returned to jiu jitsu at @garthtaylorjj after almost exactly five years off training (since the pandemic started). Finished the Lord of the Rings audiobooks narrated by @andyserkis (I’d read them before, but his version is amazing) and attended a “Rings and Dragons” fantasy concert at the Cocoanut Grove which made my inner nerd happy. Also did a lot of hiking and adventuring this spring!

April: Found out that I was unfortunately not accepted to the Science Communication graduate program that I’d applied to. Interviewed at the blacksmith shop by a film school student for a project on Storytelling in the Natural World. Visited Yosemite which was beautiful, but ended up coming home early, which unfortunately became a theme this year. Celebrated my Uncle Jerry’s 90th birthday with family & friends. Also finished several home improvement projects, most notably painting my boring white walls various shades of green!
