This is someone I’ve known all my life — and I’m still learning about him.

When he was five, his older sisters challenged him to spell and pronounce his name. He did both — but was met with laughter. The catch? He was spelling the name on paper but saying the one he was called at home, a nickname. That disconnect became his first lesson in identity. A moment that marked the beginning of self-awareness.

Born in Jos, Nigeria, Ape House grew up playing outside with other kids — a freedom that shaped his imagination. He moved to New York City as a teenager, just as he was beginning to search for who he was. “I experienced NYC when it was still raw,” he says. “I did graffiti, tagged, street raced in The Bronx.”

The name “Ape House” came from that world. His graffiti tag was an ape. Friends called his place “Ape’s house.” Later, it became the name of a print magazine he ran from 2002 to 2004. It folded, but the name lived on.

Today, he’s an independent filmmaker and visual storyteller, and his first feature-length movie just dropped on YouTube — free to stream.

“The hardest truth I learned? Audio is king. Triple-check it. Record backups. And as a director, don’t be afraid to be that guy about sound — because if audio fails, everything else crumbles.”

When asked who he creates for: “I make work for the kid who was laughed at for mispronouncing his own name.”

He hasn’t made his second film yet — “but only because of massive changes in my life. It’s coming.”

“How does my style affects my photography? On one hand, when I am stationary and photographing street portraits, people gravitate towards me and it helps make it easier for them to speak with me. However, when I am out as a street photographer, and trying to blend into my background, it can be a difficult since my style has been called LOUD. Even when I was recently in Nigeria, photographing the street was a bit challenging since I don’t own anything that makes it easy to fit in despite Nigerians dressing very colourful.” @esoweimages
