I have tried to think through everything on the front end of our build, starting in the planning and architectural phase, but we still ran into things I hadn’t considered along the way.

One example is shower niches. If you want a pony wall niche, your framer typically needs to build out a pony wall to accommodate it. If that isn’t planned from the beginning, adding one later often means sacrificing shower space that you may not want to lose.

The same goes for large-format tile. It’s beautiful, but if your shower dimensions aren’t designed around the tile size, you can end up paying for expensive tiles only to cut many of them down anyway, creating more waste and losing some of that seamless look. If that ends up being the case, check whether your supplier carries the same tile in a smaller size—it’s often much cheaper.

Another thing I didn’t fully appreciate until the installation phase was how important tile layout is. Our tile installers spent a lot of time thinking through the transitions, cuts, and veining so everything flowed as cohesively as possible. They planned the layout to avoid awkward slivers of tile at the edges. But if you’re trying to achieve a specific look, don’t assume it will automatically happen based on the tile you selected or that your installer knows your vision. Communicate your expectations early and walk through everything beforehand.

I also hadn’t planned on using mosaic tile for the shower floors, but because we chose round drains, mosaic ended up being the better option and I’m happy with how it turned out 🤗

Grout color—an the grout product you choose—can dramatically impact the finished look and the amount of maintenance you’ll have over time (or so they say 😜)

One of the biggest lessons we’ve learned is that planning ahead gives you the best opportunity to bring your vision to life, but flexibility is just as important. There will almost always be something you didn’t anticipate. Being willing to adapt and make thoughtful decisions on the spot is often what keeps the project moving.

Large-format tile has been present in Europe for a while now and over the past few years here in the United States, large-format tile has been increasing in demand in both commercial and residential applications. I am very grateful for the privilege of being able to attend @star.tile @uzinnorthamerica advanced training for large format tile panels and learn how to treat and handle these new materials

Props to @apextileandfloor for helping me secure a seat in this class
