Tlazocamati, Padiush, Gracias, Thank You 🤍 To everyone who came to the premiere of Xilopango this weekend — gracias from the bottom of my heart. Your presence, your energy, and your love made this experience cálido (heartwarming) This work carries memory, grief, and resilience across generations. To share it with you has been profoundly moving. Endless gratitude to the brilliant team, to DanceWorks + SummerWorks for believing in the vision of Central American stories in stage, and to our community — elders, family, friends, and new faces — for holding this work with such care. 🌋 This is only the beginning. —Irma and the whole Xilopango comrades. 📷 @zurdo___

Two weeks away. Xilopango lives in my bones—shaped by my mother’s voice, the outcome of displacement and the longing to return. This offering is for our matriarchs, for memory, for what refuses to be forgotten. 📅 Aug 15 – 6PM 📅 Aug 16 – 1PM 📅 Aug 17 – 4PM 📍The Theatre Centre, Toronto Presented by @danceworksto & @summerworksto — A dos semanas. Xilopango vive en mis huesos—formado por la voz de mi madre, resultado de desplazamiento y el lamento de querer regresar. Una ofrenda para nuestras matriarcas, la memoria, y lo que se niega a ser olvidado. #Xilopango25 #DanceTO #LatinxArt #DiasporaDance #HistoriasCentroamericanas #DanzaDiaspórica 📷 @zurdo___ ⸻ Alt Text A cluster of bare legs and feet balances calabash bowls in the air. One leg bears a tattoo of a woman framed in lace. The image evokes ancestral offering through the body.

“tracing four generations of women, each defined by resistance, survival, and migration“ Xilopango by Irma Villafuerte 📍Venue: The Theatre Centre, Franco Boni Theatre, 1115 Queen St W, Toronto August 15, 6:00 PM August 16, 1:00 PM August 17, 4:00 PM “Xilopango” is a contemporary dance-theatre work by Salvadorian-Canadian-Chinteña choreographer Irma Villafuerte, performed by a five-person ensemble. Named after Lake Ilopango—one of Kuskatan’s (El Salvador) most powerful volcanic calderas — “Xilopango” draws from six years of land-based research and personal history. Its choreography captures the intensity of eruption, implosion, and transformation, reflecting the seismic impact of war, colonization, and exile on familial relationships. The narrative traces four generations of women in Villafuerte’s lineage—her great-grandmother, grandmother, mother, and herself—each defined by resistance, survival, and migration. Xilopango is presented in alignment with Je ne vais pas inonder la mer. Co-presented with DanceWorks 🔥See details and full SummerWorks 2025 programming lineup at our link in bio! SummerWorks Performance Festival 2025 (August 7 - August 17) 🎟️Tickets on sale: July 15! Image by Andres Linares Two dancers intertwine in an intimate embrace, their arms extended outward in expressive arcs. Their bodies are partially hidden behind a mound of gourds and earth-toned fabrics, evoking a shrine-like altar. The stage is dark, spotlighting their connection and the textured landscape of offerings.
