Selling the business three months before my daughter arrived 👶

Andy sold his business in April, three months before his daughter was born in July.

He did a three month handover, took three months fully off, then went back mornings only.

Cash off the table and afternoons with a newborn. You can’t put a price on that.

Would you time a big business move around family? 👇

In the 5am club, but not by choice

Andy McGinley’s girls are both up between 5 and 6. Chilled but awake. He gets a coffee, clears what came in overnight and does his thinking before the day starts.

Nursery drop off, desk by 9. Remote first, so no commute eating into pickup.

Then dinner, bath, bed. Maybe a bit more work after, but a hard stop by 9. Any later and he can’t sleep.

What time do your kids have you up? 👇

We should fail fast, learn, and move on.

Easier said than done. Andy McGinley reckons the Scottish mentality around fear of failure costs people more than they realise.

His fix is a word swap. Stop calling it failure. Call it learning, because that’s all it is.

Do that and he says your odds of success are double someone starting fresh.

I’ll admit the fear is in me too. I want everything I touch to work.

Is fear of failure holding you back? 👇

He built his first business before kids. The second one after.

Andy McGinley started a tech marketplace in his 20s with no tech experience, pure energy, and made every mistake going.

Second time round he already has the network, the framework, and knows exactly where the start line is. Six months of learning the first time is now day one knowledge.

Different space entirely. Same playbook.

He was offered £70 for a golf club he knew they’d sell for £150.

So Andy McGinley looked up their accounts. They were turning over millions.

That’s how the idea started. Not a brainstorm, just being nosy about where the margin was going.

Then he looked at Facebook, Gumtree and eBay. Is it real, is it fake, can you come round, cash only. Sellers putting up with a terrible experience because nobody had built a better one.

Bat Market did it in electronics. Reverb did it in instruments. Nobody had done it in golf.

Where have you spotted a gap and done nothing about it? 👇

He sold £25k of a product that didn’t exist yet.

Not a line of code written. Andy McGinley sold it to providers first, then sold the buy to let from his uni days and put another £20k in.

One of the companies he pitched liked it so much he invested £50k and became a co-founder.

That startup went on to raise £9 million in venture funding, then sold. And then he did the whole thing again, this time with a young family at home.

New episode out today.
