Could Jesus have survived the cross? Comment CROSS and I'll reply with the sources.

Nails went through the wrists, because the palm can't hold the body's weight. If a victim took too long to die, soldiers broke his legs so he could no longer push up to breathe. John records that they came to break Jesus' legs and found him already dead.

The one survival case we know of comes from Josephus. He saw three men he knew on crosses and got them taken down early and treated by physicians. Two of them still died. No one is known to have survived a completed crucifixion.

On the cross, every word cost Jesus a breath he had to fight for. Save this for Good Friday.

When you hang by your arms, you can't breathe out properly. The best-known medical study of the crucifixion argues the victim had to push up on nailed feet to breathe, with a flogged back scraping the wood. Pathologists still debate the exact mechanism, but every model agrees breathing was agony.

So when he spoke, he meant every word. Read it again with that in mind: "Father, forgive them, for they know not what they do."

"Excruciating" comes from the cross. Share this with someone who has never thought about it.

The word comes from the Latin excruciare, rooted in crux, "cross". Think about that. Someone sat down and designed a slow, public way to kill a man.

It started with flogging. The Roman whip had several leather thongs weighted with bone or metal, and the wounds caused serious blood loss. Then the condemned man carried the crossbeam to the site.

And he was naked through all of it. That's your Lord.

Does God want people healed? Yes. Jesus healed everyone who came to Him, and God is more willing to heal than we can receive.

So why are many not healed? Swipe through to see what Scripture says about faith, healing, divine sovereignty, and why the problem is never God’s willingness.

Three things Islam denies about Jesus, and why they matter. Save this before your next conversation.

Do Christians and Muslims serve the same God? Islam denies the crucifixion, the deity of Christ and the resurrection. Those aren't side issues, and I don't think we can wave them away. Paul says that without the resurrection our faith is in vain.

On the crucifixion, you don't even need Christian scholars. Bart Ehrman, an agnostic New Testament scholar, says there is no doubt Jesus was crucified. The Quran says he was not killed or crucified, only made to appear so.

How do we know Jesus died? Ask more than one witness. Comment WITNESS for the full list.

Historians call it multiple attestation. When independent sources describe the same event in their own words, that agreement counts as evidence. If every witness tells exactly the same story, word for word, you'd suspect they rehearsed it.

The first-generation accounts in Matthew, Mark, Luke and John all record that Jesus died on the cross. In the next generation, Clement of Rome, Ignatius and Polycarp affirm the same thing. So does a Roman historian with no reason to help Christians.
