It was great to meet musician and large-scale projection wizard Kelsey Etter at this year’s IngenuityFest. I enjoyed talking with him about his craft and his work around Northeast Ohio. Kelsey told me he was born in Avon Lake, now lives in Lakewood with his family. We talked about his lifelong interest in music and experimentation. It was also so much fun watching him play with another great local musician, Mic Fox, at Crystal Palace, Joey Varanese’s wonderful music spot.

Kelsey said he has spent nearly five years working with video synthesis and large-scale projection, creating visuals that respond to music in real time. When I asked how he got started, he explained that he bought a video synthesizer and connected it to his record player to visualize the records he was listening to. He felt that experience strengthened his connection to the music and wondered whether bringing it into a concert setting could do the same for others. Working as Goo La Goon, his projection credits include Apostle Jones’s album-release show at the Beachland Ballroom and Atmospheres at Oxbow in Valley View.

His musical work also includes playing guitar on six tracks and helping record drums for Zip-Zapp!’s self-titled 2019 album. He contributed synthesizers to “Deathcult” on their 2020 album, The Hand of God, and Scum Guppies credit him with recording their 2018 release, Island Breeze. His visual work extends to cover artwork for The Eisenberg Review, Teddy Eisenberg’s radio show on WRUW-FM 91.1 Cleveland. On March 19, 2026, Eisenberg celebrated the program’s 100th Goo La Goon cover. I appreciated hearing how an experiment with his own record player grew into work he could share with other music lovers. Explore more at @kelso_online and @_goo_la_goon.
