When my friend @AprilHussar asked me to name a place that was both cheap and chic for her @HouseBeautiful story, I jumped at the chance to rave about Madrid. 🇪🇸 “The people on the streets have an easy European style, and the interior spaces, including cafes, shops, and even the Airbnbs are beautifully appointed with chic touches,” she says. “The buildings, which are incredibly detailed, are a blend of architectural styles, including Renaissance, Baroque, and Gothic. Everywhere you go in the city feels like a scene in a movie.”

Madrid is only one of 10 fabulous cheap/chic destinations in this helpful piece. 🔗 The link is in stories - you'll want to go to them all!

My aversion to paper plates isn’t just a pet peeve- it’s something deeply tied to my personal values and upbringing.

As a child, my French father always said, “Even for a simple piece of bread and butter, use a real dish, a placemat, a nice glass.” This lesson in grace was more than etiquette—it was about savoring the moment, respecting the meal, no matter how humble.
So very French indeed. It’s funny because I think this approach to life played a part in the spark that ignited my career devoted to elevating everyday beauty.

Years later, this ethos came alive unexpectedly. For my son’s kindergarten Valentine’s party, I sidestepped paper plates for thrift shop china and glassware, even adding red cloth napkins i bought at Home Goods for twenty bucks. The skepticism from other moms was swift and predictable—“OMG! Classic Courtney Cachet, you’re so over the top“. But, I remained confident and unfazed as I prepared the room.

As soon as the kids entered the room and saw their desks set up like a restaurant, something shifted. Where there could have been chaos, there was poise, instead of carelessness, care was taken. There were lots of oohs and ahs as each of them felt clearly elevated by the simple dignity of real dishes. The room buzzed not with the sounds of ripping paper and cracking plastic, but with a little bit of elegance I hadn’t seen before.

That day, we all learned something.

Yes, paper plates are convenient, and let’s face it-a sink full of dishes sucks. But the quality of life isn’t measured in minutes saved. It’s in the moments experienced, the daily beauty infused into the ordinary.

The children discovered a new way to enjoy their treats, and I saw my father’s French sensibilities spark a little more joy, a little more pride, in their faces. It was a testament to my life’s work—making every moment, no matter how small, a fabulous one.

After all, isn’t life too short for paper plates when you can have porcelain?

@aprilhussar thanks for inspiring me to elaborate ❤️

Already having withdrawals after the @truedetective finale? Read my @romper story about that flashback birthing scene, which masterfully exemplifies the tension between modern-day interests and ancient Indigenous practices—while also highlighting a major shortage of Alaska midwives in the state and a new executive order that threatens their existence. Huge thanks to @auntieabra of @alaskanativebirthworkers and @rhonda.lee.grantham of the @centerforindigenousmidwifery for sharing their invaluable insights, including this key takeaway: “Being an Indigenous midwife is inherently political.” Link in bio.

“Having children actually deepened my curiosity of what makes us, us. Something I’d been drawn to from a young age, listening to the stories my grandmother shared. Listening to the spaces between those stories. Wishing I had more time with her, with a more mature mind to ask her about those spaces.

I wanted to make a room for those stories from all of us. Parenting can feel like writing a lot of the time. It can be isolating. Only you know what’s happening inside your body, inside your mind. There’s a lot to process in a short amount of time, while each day stands as its own eternity. Then we come from under the fog. We reach for our neighbor, our friend. We remember that we belong to a community. We don’t have to be alone. Some of us are more fortunate than others in that regard. Some of us find our people in this revelatory phase of life online. We meet our people.”

It was an honor to be invited to the Founder of Care.com and Ohai.ai, @sheilaliriomarcelo’s home for the exclusive media launch of Ohai, the revolutionary AI household assistant for all chief household officers (aka, all of us who are multitasking through life)

As an incredibly proud first generation Filipina American (+ ambitious female leader) I’ve had moments of self-doubt especially in a male dominated, westernized media industry that rarely makes room for those like me. Today I’m feeling empowered by Sheila’s story, her innovation and tenacity shown in her business ventures, and lastly, the high energy exuding from the prolific female leaders I bonded with today. I feel seen and I’m so, so glad I was able to see all of you.

Lets make a commitment to take up more space and continue to push more boundaries ladies - to continue to be bold, authentic, determined and take well deserved breaths in between to savor every part of our unique journeys.

Thank you for providing us this moment Sheila and @rakiareynolds.

"How to explain to you the hold those nails had on my young psyche? How they represented to me the absolute epitome of glamour? I coveted them dearly, and receiving them felt like a genie had granted me a wish." What fancy beauty product did you envy as a kid?

I took some time today to wander back through the hundreds (many hundreds) of stories we put up on @romper this year. I’m so moved and proud by all this incredible writing and mostly grateful to work with the very best people. The last slide here will give you a (largely unsurprising) glimpse of what it’s like to be on zoom with me, gesticulating wildly.
