Do you remember where you were on 11 September 2001?
Do you remember where you were on 7 October 2001?
Do you remember where you were on 2 May 2011?

It continues to fascinates us how these 3 dates connect to each other and only one of them is commemorated worldwide.

We, of course, mourn the fallen civilians in the USA because of the 11 September 2001 attack.
But we can't stop wondering how the world doesn't really mourn the lives of people in Afghanistan who were officially invaded by the US on 7 October 2011.

After the 11 September 2001 attack, the US basically went ballistic and invaded many countries, starting with Afghanistan. In the name of finding out the perpetrator(s), a worldwide hunt was conducted and ridiculously the man who became a face of the 11 September 2001 attack was found in a mansion, in a country that is supposed to be a US-ally, Pakistan.
If the whole invasion sounds outrageous to you, it's because it was!

Now, Afghanistan and Pakistan are not the thriving country they could have been.

Thankfully for us, these two countries have brilliant diaspora who write amazingly! These are some books we have by authors who are from Afghanistan and Pakistan. Some still live in their respective countries, some are successful as diaspora.

Ask us about these books! We’ll be happy to tell you about them!

Next Thursday: Kristen Gleason talks with A Public Space editor Brigid Hughes about THE WALLET & OTHER THEFTS, out now from @fonografeditions. Community Bookstore, 143 7th Avenue, 7/30, 7:00pm.

“We readers of "The Wallet and Other Thefts" are lucky: placed in a position of non-mastery, presented with surprises and oblique connections to puzzle through…a book of sudden kicks and inhuman laughter.” -C. Greer Comrie, @fullstopmag @chamberstudy

Small Scale Sinners by Mahreen Sohail

In this collection of twelve short stories, Mahreen Sohail details the lives of various women in both Pakistan and America with prose so tender and powerful. Her writing just flows effortlessly which made this a quick read for me.

My favorite story by far is the one titled “Sisters” in which a younger sister feels pain and grief for leaving her older sister to attend college in America. She acknowledges the loneliness she feels when their relationship begins to strain, but also pushes past her grief of what she’s leaving behind to create a life for herself outside of her family.

A lot of the other stories share similar themes of grief, guilt, shame, suffering, and finding meaning in life beyond all of these feelings while embracing all facets of life. Sohail focuses on the coming of age of young girls and women navigating adult life, and the pressures of society and their families of who they feel they’re supposed to be and who they want to be.

Nobody wants to think about the fall yet, but it's coming. This October 8-11, it'll be redeemed by A Public Space's 2026 Weekend Writer's Retreat at Kaatsbaan Cultural Park, where you can also watch the leaves change color. And there still may be room in the workshops taught by fabulosi like @JoAnnBeard, @MaryBethHughes, @TracyO'Neill, @RobertSullivan, @HanOng, and @AdaZhang and myself, or attend literary salons hosted by @SamanthaHunt, and @amitavawriter, or a movement class taught by my former yoga instructor @sadhanacenter. I may teach the lemon thing again. Deets here: https://apublicspace.org/events/2026-weekend-writers-retreat-with-a-public-space?mc_cid=a102b8c91d&mc_eid=7e1b897e78

This is a @kasianikhamina appreciation post!

@kasianikhamina and I met over twenty years ago, when she was living in Moscow for the year, and I was living in Yaroslavl (pictured here: meeting up in St. Petersburg). I was partially drawn to her because she was one of the only literature and writing lovers I knew there, but also for her contagious energy, how she was continuously in awe of beautiful details in the world. She was writing creatively at the time, and I was not, but she inspired me to return to it, my first love. We kept in touch for a year or so after, but then I isolated myself during my twenties to write, and she got married and started a successful business with her husband. But over the last several years, we’ve reconnected, and I’ve been reading her writing, and editors have been noticing her finally (it’s about time!). She recently published a beautiful short story inspired by her time in Russia in the most recent issue of @apublicspace and an insightful essay about her jobs in and after college in the anthology Search Work. You should check them out: she was writing the excerpt pictured here when she was only twenty-one; you can only imagine what she can write now. “Give us full cups so that we might have full lives” indeed. Love you, friend! You deserve the world. ❤️
