World age group aquabike champion!! 🏆

Still processing it all, to win my age group and finish 3rd overall at a world championship is a crazy thing to say. Had the joy of my fastest ever open water swim and then a bike course that suited me perfectly 🤩

And to do it with my family who had travelled over to Spain made it even better 😃 even had my Dad racing with me!

Digging holes… and taking the win! 🥇😁

This is what AG racing is all about! Being honest there were multiple points this week where I nearly dropped from this race, but I’m so so glad I didn’t! 7 races in 6 weeks post Banyoles had me coming in to this pretty well done but despite the weathers best efforts there’s just something super special about getting to race and share the podium with friends!

Thanks @nathanmorgan14 @colinnadin, pleasure to share the podium with you and see you both getting back in to form again! You certainly pushed me all the way! @rowenarogers62 for toughing it out on a bit of a brutal day and the whole rest of the GB Aquabike community who continue to bring immaculate race day vibes no matter what the event or conditions! We may be competitors once the gun goes but your also some of the most supportive people I know!

Main plan of attack for this weekend was to keep things sensible, race to the conditions and learn from the mistakes I made here back in ‘24. Kept things controlled but strong in the swim and followed much the same pattern on the bike till Nathan came screaming past towards the end of lap 2 setting up for some hard work to even get back in touch on the last lap! Took a bit of rest after bridging the gap and launched what turned out to be the decisive move on the main climb with about 10 km to go, holding on to win by just 9 seconds!

So now what? Well it’s time for a well earned rest, recovery and reset week to get me feeling a bit more human again. And then? Back on it for the final push in to long distance worlds in Abu Dhabi! It’s going to have been another long season but I’m looking forward to taking this on, along with some potential exciting side quests you might hear more about soon! 😁

Recipe for a European Championships Aquabike! 🥵

Place 40 odd athletes in 30 degree water and simmer for ~30 mins, contact is encouraged to tenderise the field! Upon completion promptly place on to two wheels on hot tarmac and roast for ~2 and a half hours, garnish with Catalan hills and Age group European titles on the line and you’ve got the recipe for a very spicy day out!

Came in to this weeks champs with high hopes of fighting for the medals in AG and whilst that didn’t quite materialise I’m proud of how I raced and adapted on the day to the conditions, and still managed to get stuck in to the battles right to the end, nicking 5th in AG, 23rd overall and 4th Brit overall in the process!

The day started off well with one of my better non-wetsuit swims over the distance. That came about despite the high water temperature and ending up off in non mans land by myself on the way back in! A rapid transition then put me in good position heading on to the bike!

Tried to keep things controlled early and only really started pushing the brave button on the second climb towards the end of the first lap as was feeling strong. Unfortunately the heat of the day had other ideas and bit me hard through the middle part of lap 2. A prompt dousing of water and being passed by another gb athlete in my catagory gave me a second wind and the motivation I needed to dig in and fight it out right to the finish line as we each tried to maximise our respective strengths in our battle for 5th in AG!

So yes, not the weekend I’d hoped for in results terms, but a lot of lessons learned, pride taken and a great weekend which truly showcased the amazing AG Aquabike community that’s developing! Can’t wait to see where it goes next in Abu Dhabi for worlds in November! But for now I think it’s time for a well deserved mid season break!
