A few sculpin eaters from the past week. This fly is one of my favorites for swinging for trout in the late fall in Alaska. Olive and orange is a staple combination in just about every trout box, but upsizing it and dressing it on a shank makes it a great option for these bigger Alaskan fish.

I got a few new materials from @mossysflyshop this past week, including these olive shimmer rabbit strips. I’ve never used them before, but after seeing how they look in the water, I’ll definitely be keeping some on hand. I also picked up more angora goat and orange polar chenille. The selection at Mossy’s is pretty sweet, and there’s even more to come with the bigger space at the new shop.

I’ve been calling this fly the “Fancy Rabbit Strip.” It starts with a small mono loop tied to the back of a 43mm shank. I used @airflofishing running line since that’s what I had on hand. The rabbit strip is tied in at the rear, followed by red polar flash up to the front station.

The front station is orange angora goat or STS dubbing with orange polar chenille in a loop, using about 2–3 turns for some extra bulk. The rabbit is then brought forward behind the bead-chain eyes, followed by pumpkin rubber legs, grizzly hackle, and teal. I like the grizzly to run slightly over 2/3 the length of the rabbit, with the teal just a bit shorter.

The head is more rabbit in a dubbing loop, wrapped over the eyes in a figure eight, followed by 1½–2 turns in front of the eyes for a little extra bulk and movement.

I really like using a mono loop instead of wire or braid. It gives me more control over how the hook sits with the longer tail, and makes changing hooks quick and easy. I’ve found braid can get too soft and tangle on bad casting days, while wire can break on bigger fish.

I tie on roughly 2/3 of the shank, leaving the back 1/3 bare for junction tubing and the hook. This setup lets me adjust the hook position or change hooks whenever needed.

Definitely one I would recommend for fall trout in Alaska.

One of my favorite quick flies that I use for just about all of the species I target like big Kenai trout, steelhead, salmon, and sea run Dollie’s. You can try this thing in any color size or shape you want, this thing can do and catch just about anything. #fishalaska #troutbum #flytyingjunkie

BIG restock on Intruders from our friends at @aquaflies.

Over the years, the Intruder steelhead pattern has proven itself to be a staple for swinging. Despite its many variations and iterations, it ALWAYS produces.

We just did a big restock of our favorites from @aquaflies, who seriously know their way around the anadromous world.

Swing by the shop to check them out, shop online at @caddisflyshop, and, as always, please reach out if you have any questions.
