July is disability pride month making it a great time to highlight disabled authors & books with different types of disabled representation♿️
I’ve included mostly horror novels but some litfic, sci-fi, and even a little romance is mixed in there too👀 and 2 slides of great non-fiction recommendations spanning from memoirs to historical looks at disabilities!
A big reminder that not all disabilities are visible nor are they always physical, but all disabilities are valid and should be advocated for - saying this as a neurodivergent/OCD baddie with hEDS/endometriosis/misc. chronic illnesses who looks able bodied! Sending love to fellow people with disabilities and to remind you to be KIND to yourselves💗

Last but never least. 🖤

We first met Aquino shortly after The Brood opened. She had just moved to the area, and her energy pulled us in immediately. When we learned about the work she was building through @thirdestatebooks, we knew she belonged here.

📚 Third Estate Books is a horror publishing cooperative dedicated to Radical, Degenerate, Queer, Weirdo Horror. They publish work that pushes the boundaries of terror and invites readers to sit with deeper questions about the world we live in. Liberation through horror. That’s the mission.

✨ Aquino Loayza is an Autistic Polyamorous Transfemme artist originally from Boston, now rooted in Springfield. She runs Third Estate Books, an indie press committed to publishing work the mass market won’t touch. Third Estate recently published the first Autistic Fiction Collection in United States history, alongside a growing catalog of bold, boundary pushing novels.

Outside of publishing, Aquino organizes in her community, makes music, creates art, watches cinema, and takes long walks with her Pug, Sushi.

She is our 4th and final friend we invited to fill our book cases. We are so glad she said yes. 🖤📚

Sometimes you publish a writer who becomes not only a friend & a colleague but also a muse. As I was editing @kylekouri brilliant nonfiction debut THE PROBLEM DRINKER (coming out June 2!!!), I pictured him at the various bars he described himself having moments at. Moments with family, self reflection in the midst of trying to forget the sadness & find the joy in life.

We chatted after the StokerCon film fest, joking about making a movie when I suddenly asked him if he’d star in a movie I made. He said yes. Instantly, without hesitation. His trust in me gave me courage. I thought, I have my star! I can do this!

So I crawled out of my 20+ year retirement from the medium of cinema. Shameful secret: I wanted to be a director. I wanted to make movies. In my 20s as I tried to do it at school I found myself underwater & lost. Unsupported as a female filmmaker by the film dept. I gave up. I hate to say it but I gave up. I thought, maybe I’ll just write. That should be easier (insert massive eye roll here).

All this to say, I made a short horror film that celebrates my love of zany & vintage horror & Kyle stars in it!

We are doing a movie premiere here in Troy! Come to the coolest (& only) Mead Hall in town @meadworkstroy

Talented gorgeous poet & podcast host Lauren Milici ( @motelsiren ) also stars in the film & will be in attendance reading from her upcoming poetry collection with @clashbooks UNLIKEABLE FEMALE PROTAGONIST & her beloved SAD SEXY CATHOLIC will be available for sale as well as copies of THE PROBLEM DRINKER.

Most of the cast will be in attendance & Troy’s very own @518craft bartender Dean Giagni who plays the bartender in my film 😂 will be also reading from one of his books.

We also have badass poet @scottlaudati reading since was hanging out during the shoot, adding cool vibes.

Let’s drink some mead & get crazy. 🌙
