Arafat: Meanings and Origin

Arafat is both a personal name and a place name. It is a gender-neutral name of Arabic origin from عرفات (Arafāt). It is also spelt Arafaah, Arafaat, Arafaath, Arafa, Arafah, Arafeh, Arafet, Erafah and Erafat.

The personal name means “born on the Day of Arafat”. As a place name, it means “place of introduction/knowledge” or “Mount Of Recognition”.

The personal name is popularly associated with Yasser Arafat, a Former President of the State of Palestine.

Arafat is the name of a hill near the city of Mecca, Saudi Arabia that pilgrims visit during the hajj pilgrimage. This place is also called Jabal ar-Raḥmah.

The Day of Arafat is an Islamic holiday on the ninth day of Dhul Hijjah, the twelfth month on the Islamic calendar. People on hajj would gather on the plains of Arafat to seek the pleasure of God and come to know each other.

Places called Arafat are also found in the region Diyarbakir in Turkey and within Dakar, Senegal with both alluding to the one near Mecca.
