POSTS STORIES REELS TAGGED

So damn sweet to join the poetry faculty lineup for @mccormack_writing_center’s Winter Online Workshop. My debut collection clicked into place at 2019’s Summer Workshop—swipe for theee best workshop crew and the first time I wrote down “AGAINST HEAVEN.” I remember @zefrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrr telling me she loved “against” titles, and now we’re gonna be faculty together 🥹. @a.l.major has been such a thoughtful program director, so I know there’s plenty of beauty in store.

Applications are open til September 28. Can’t go wrong with this brilliant crew of writers, but tap in with me to play with sound and the surreal. For a taste of my style, join “Ready for the Marvelous,” my @nepoetrysociety workshop Saturday, September 19. Links in bio.✨ McCormack Writing Center Flyer. Yellow and white text on blue background:

#DarkestMargins is a collection of 24 essays from leading and up-and-coming genre writers exploring liminality and liminal spaces in the horror genre, across cinema, literature, television, art and video games.

Taking in anthropological, psychological and architectural liminality, and accompanied by 4 stunning pieces of original artwork (including incredible wraparound cover art by @kim_a_tron ), the assembled academic and engaging essays undertake what has not been done on this scale before: to explore, map, analyze and discuss those rites of passage, states of ambiguity or disorientation and physical waypoints in a wide variety of works across more than a century of horror media.

From @arachleaa 's analysis of @matidiop 's Atlantique to @commedesgargoyles discussion of @markzdanielewski 's seminal work Hoyse of Leaves, via @myroslava.halushka 's exploration of the works of H.R. Giger, and a Foreword by @horrornonna , Darkest Margins is not to be slept on.

Our crowdfunder (link in bio) is currently at £900 of £1,605. If we can reach our goal, we'll introduce a stretch goal of CROWDFUNDER-EXCLUSIVE HARDBACK EDITIONS (including for those who already backed).

Please consider backing this amazing horror project!

We're almost halfway!!!

Thanks to the amazing generosity of our supporters so far, we're at £750 of our £1,605 target (and that's without even being able to sell to US customers - YET).

THANK YOU for your generous support.

Now let's keep this moving! Just two more pledges at our "Just the Book (Print)" level will get us to 50%.

And, IF we can secure our £1,605 target soon enough, we have a STRETCH GOAL in mind...did somebody say HARDBACK EDITIONS?

If we can introduce and reach a stretch goals of £2,000, everyone who has pledged for a print copy will receive a super-limited, crowdfunder-only HARDBACK EDITION of DARKEST MARGINS.

Tell your friends!

We at 1428 feel sad that, currently, we cannot make #DarkestMargins available to our friends in the US, thanks to the current Tariffs situation (Big Beautiful Bill My Balls).

We've had queries from US friends about when they might be able to purchase a copy, and all I can say right now is watch this space.

Currently, to ship a single book to the US, the total price is almost $100. We can't pass that entire expense onto the customer (it doesn't seem fair) but we can't pick it up ourselves (we'd go broke quickly).

We WOULD like to try to meet you half way - we take on some of the load, the customer takes on some.

SO, to US customers ONLY...what would you be willing to pay to get your hands on a copy of #darkestmargins ? Even without tariffs, the cost of a book + shipping would be $60. WITH tariffs, it is a prohibitive $94.06.

But what's the sweet spot in between? At what price would you still consider it worth your while?

Please comment below, or DM us, share this post, and we promise we'll get to work to bring you the best deal we can!

The film, after winning the Grand Prix at the 2019 Cannes Film Festival, was chosen as Senegal's official submission for the Best International Feature Film Category at the 92nd Acadamy Awards. It beat 81 other films to make the 10-strong shortlist for an Oscar

Here’s some double double, toil, and trouble to honour the cute chaos & uncanny valley of Gemini season! 👯‍♀️♊️✨️

On the topic of the lesbian doppelganger trope in media, queer cultural theorist Barbara Creed writes:

“Representations of the lesbian double – circulated in fashion magazines, film and p*rn*graphy – draw attention to the nature of the image itself, its association with the feminine, and the technologies that enable duplication and repetition. The lesbian double threatens because it suggests a perfectly sealed world of female desire from which man is excluded, not simply because he is a man, but also because of the power of the technology to exclude the voyeuristic spectator. But exclusion is also part of the nature of voyeuristic pleasure which demands that a distance between the object and the subject who is looking should always be preserved. Photographic technology, with its powers of duplication, reinforces a fear that, like the image itself, the lesbian couple-as-double will reduplicate and multiply.”

Excerpt from “Lesbian Bodies: Tribades, Tomboys and Tarts” (1995)

For further reading, I recommend seeking out Lea Anderson’s (@arachleaa) terrific essay “The Bad One: Black Women And Our Doppelgängers” for @fangoria (pictured via last slide)
