I bought this cookbook 16 years ago, during one of the most meaningful trips of my life — time spent in Salvador, Bahia 🇧🇷.
I can count the places that truly changed me on one hand… maybe five total. Bahia is one of them.

What I fell in love with wasn’t just the food (though the food is unforgettable). It was the deep African heritage, the way fishing, cooking, and daily life are woven together. Fresh seafood pulled straight from the water. Dendê oil, coconut, heat, rhythm. Meals that feel ancestral, not trendy.

Bahia is a lifestyle — barefoot, salty, soulful. The beauty of the people, the water, the music, the joy. And yes… the party. Salvador does Carnival in a way no other city in Brazil can touch. It’s electric, communal, alive.

This cookbook has stayed with me all these years because it holds that feeling. The smells, the flavors, the stories. It’s still one of my favorites on my shelf.

And maybe… just maybe… 2026 is the year I return. A reunion. A full-circle moment with some of the faces in these photos. @aranajoi @mikiramsaydoherty @sarahtaylorwriter @daniellecoldingdesign
Back to the place that fed my spirit as much as it fed my soul.

Dropped myself off in Harlem for @roosterharlem 15th Anniversary in a vintage dandy feather frock. Corseted on date night with longtime lavender love @citykidgo.

Evening highlights included neighbors @mandacwallace @aaronbeaumont squeezing me into the dress, driving with restricted breath repeating “fashion is pain”, devouring juicy drumsticks passed by Marcus Samuelson himself, twirling in my tight mini dress, bumping into friends both old and new, and every inside joke with Jeff that made me forget the world’s woes… and my inability to breathe. 🪩 I love you friends. 🥂

Note to you: Get yourself to Harlem hunny. This Brooklyn boo had a ball!

This weekend was epic! I was part of a small group that helped bring @dancetheatreofharlem out to the Hamptons.

Dance Theatre of Harlem performed to a sold-out debut at @guild_hall, and that was followed by an unforgettable private reception hosted by me, Terri Prettyman Bowles and @bonitacstewart . The weekend brought together a powerful community of supporters including artist Sandford Biggers (@sanfordbiggers ), TV media personalities Tamron Hall (@tamronhall) and Sunny Hostin (@sunny), Philanthropist Loida Lewis (@loidanlewis) and more.

Congratulations to @annaglass, @robertgarland, all of the dancers, Jeanine Reynolds, and the whole DTH team on a phenomenal performance and celebration!

Big thanks go to the host committee: Peg Alston, Heather Benjamin, Terri Prettyman Bowles, Sanford Biggers, Marcie Cleary, Stephanie Horton, Sunny Hostin, Loida Lewis, Karen Phillips, Fred Royall, Bonita Stewart, and Reginald Van Lee.

For over 56 years, DTH has redefined what ballet can be. This weekend was a reminder that the organization’s mission—to expand access, celebrate excellence, and move boldly forward—resonates far and wide.

Empire closed out the Summer in Sag Harbor with a champagne 🍾 pool party at the home of Mother Shawndra Hill and Anthony Crawford (the grill master;) and co-hosted by Mother Gaya Gunasekaran. The day was filled with good food, friendship and fun for the kids as they enjoyed swimming and other activities that kept them happily engaged all afternoon including the arrival of their very own ice cream truck! (That was such a moment that it needed its own video. 😀Be sure to check out video #2.) Empire had much to celebrate as we toasted the success of the chapter’s 3rd year led by our President Shawn Pride, the Executive Board and all of the Empire Mothers and families who supported the journey towards the exciting new path ahead for our community. Thank you again to @jackandjillmetro Mothers Tracy McNeil, Blaine North, Arana Biggers and Deirdre Stanley for joining Empire for the fellowship and festivities. The vibe for the day was a celebration of #Family and #Friendship.
