With vibrant washes of pink and purple flowers, a recent maintenance visit to New England Biolabs demonstrates what is possible when living infrastructure is thoughtfully designed—and consistently cared for.

Spanning more than 32,000 square feet, these interconnected green roofs support watershed protection, energy conservation, and thriving pollinator habitat while creating beautiful views for employees throughout the campus.

Designed in collaboration with Columbia Construction, ARC, Richard Burck Associates, Studio Sustena, and Offshoots, these roofs continue to evolve with ongoing stewardship from our horticulture team.

At the new home for @AmericanRep (A.R.T.) at @Harvard, flexibility isn't just part of the programming—it's built into the building itself. With 20 movable audience galleries, reconfigurable stage platforms, and 53 overhead rigging line sets supporting scenery, lighting, and sound, nearly every element of the building's larger theater has been engineered to adapt to each production's creative vision.

Delivering that level of flexibility requires extraordinary planning and coordination. Working alongside @haworthtompkins, @arc_usa, @charcoalblue, and Harvard Capital Projects, the project team is integrating specialized theater systems with the building's mass timber structure to create a venue unlike any other.

In this behind-the-scenes look, Shawmut Senior Project Manager Caitlin Bernal takes us inside the West Stage to share how thoughtful constructability and technical expertise are helping bring this one-of-a-kind performance space to life.

Throwback Thursday!

On June 23rd, BR+A hosted a women’s luncheon to honor International Women in Engineering Day. To kick off the event, Jennifer Leach of BR+A, gave an impactful presentation on leading with confidence within a male dominated field. Following Jen’s empowering words small groups gathered for a female-centric fun trivia match.

Shoutout to Joel Pettigrew of ARC for keeping the energy high as an incredible trivia host and to all the amazing women in engineering who joined us, both virtually and in-person.

Here's to celebrating community, connection and the brilliant women who continue to shape the future of engineering!

The David E. and Stacey L. Goel Center for Creativity & Performance—the future home of the @americanrep at @Harvard—is one of the largest mass timber performing arts buildings in North America, bringing together advanced mass timber construction, complex acoustic performance requirements, and highly coordinated prefabrication within a design-forward cultural space.

Designed by @haworthtompkins and @arc_usa, the 86,000-square-foot facility is taking shape through an extraordinary level of planning, technical precision, and collaboration.

In @enr.news' latest “Digging Deeper” feature, members from across the project team share a behind-the-scenes look at how the project is coming together—from phased structural sequencing and mass timber installation to acoustic isolation, long-span performance spaces, and integrated MEP coordination.

A pair of cherry tables made for Deerfield Academy. Thanks to Brian Langhorst of @eustischair, who recommended us for this job. You are looking at two 54" x 96" tables, with the tops made of planks of solid cherry. This is about as large as we will make a solid wood top. If they get larger, expansion issues become difficult to manage. That's why our larger tables are made with combinations of veneered panels and solid wood edges.

If the beautiful room catches your eye, it's the work of ARC Architects.

Project Spotlight: Deerfield Academy — Part 2

In our previous post, we highlighted Deerfield's unique service model—750 guests seated together for a shared, family-style meal.

The next challenge: how do you produce and serve all 750 meals hot at the exact same time?

Deerfield's previous kitchen relied on a "just-in-time" approach, requiring all food to be prepped and cooked immediately before service—an extremely labor-intensive process for a scratch kitchen.

During programming and concept design, we introduced a cook/chill system. This allows the Dining team to prepare meals well in advance while maintaining HACCP food safety standards.

After testing the system firsthand, the benefits were clear:
• Reduced labor
• Improved consistency
• Less food waste
• More efficient operations

To support this, the kitchen was carefully planned with the appropriate equipment and capacity, including multiple roll-in combi ovens, blast chillers, and rethermalization systems—each selected to ensure seamless execution at scale.

Stay tuned as we continue to explore this project.
