A monthly art class where we practice landscape painting techniques in detail; exploring the nuisance of key elements in creating our pieces. These classes are currently set for the 1st Sunday of every month at the Arc-Co Create Cafe, Tunapuna from 10am to 12pm. With the first session being the 8th November, 2026. The cost of the session is set at only $150.00 TTD. With an effort to make these recurring classes more affordable and practical, you are invited to bring your own materials (canvas & paints). I would recommend canvas as a working surface (these come in pads that make transporting easy) or canvas panel/s (such as what was used in the workshop). Materials will be provided at an extra cost of $25.00 & $50.00 to those that require it. (Table top easels, brushes, palettes, paper towels and water cups are provided for everyone free of charge.) . Last week you, my friends, loved me up on your timelines! Thank you. This week I want to share a bit about one aspect of my life. Decades ago I started conducting occasional visitor tours because I wanted to showcase the off-the-beaten-track aspects of Trinidad and Tobago. But when I became a ‘chocolate activist’ the content dramatically changed. It became cultural examination, economic analysis, environmental research and specialized culinary sampling especially, of course, chocolate. This past week I co-hosted my second full service Trinidad tour for the year (Chocolates, Cooperatives and Culture) in which we (the Alliance of Rural Communities, Collective Diaspora, the Cross Atlantic Chocolate Collective and several associated orgs) custom catered to a small group of African-American cooperators. People came in from Atlanta and New York to learn about our chocolate, what collaboration looks like here and to compare/contrast cultures. We’ll be doing a similar trip as @chocolaterebellion in Ghana in November and 2027 trips to Trinidad and Tobago, Cote D’Ivoire and Cameroon where we have cocoa growers/chocolate producers. I LOVE hosting and sharing why I and my co-conspirators are so thrilled by life! From forest pools to kalinda (stick fighting), from tiny rural community coops to large soca fetes, from sit down restaurants to food tents the riches of our spaces are epic. But, best of all, we TAKE CARE of each other. From the occasional dramatic life rescue, to sharing food, to being thoughtful about boundaries, to major mutual support. The world I’m interested in is defiantly NOT about Louboutin red soles, or extractive foods, or dishonesty, or being wrong and strong. These trips allow us to practice caring across cultures. I’m deeply grateful to get to shape them. 🌴Lost in Trinbago🌴 It's been almost one year since I got entagled in an adventure in the Caribbean—in an initiative we call ✨futuresanitation-lab✨. It all started when Franz (my colleague from Finizio) and I had lunch with Mario (@forestnotebooks.res) in Berlin and learnt about his art and composting activities in Trinidad. A couple of months later, we decided to travel to Trinidad to explore the potential for circular sanitation in Trinidad & Tobago. 🏝️ At that time, I couldn't anticipate where it would lead us and how exciting this would become. 🤩 It was my first time doing field research and I figured out that research—collecting puzzle pieces and putting the puzzle together—is both super exciting and exhausting for me. I knew alomst nothing about Trinbago before I travelled there. Through interviewing farmers, scientists, officers, community leaders and many more, conducting participatory action research and observing people's practices, I got to learn more and more. It was amazing that we had our own exhibition—we called it SHIT (Shifting how I think)—after such a short time. 🙌 I'm grateful that so many people came to our events and were open to speak with us about 💩. I also love that it's so easy to make people laugh just by mentioning *shit*. 😄 Thanks to Mario, we got in contact with the local art scene and met so many cool, interesting people! Big thanks also to @cooper.libre and @greerjoneswoodham for hosting me! What a crazy experience it was being so close to Venezuala when Maduro was kidnapped by the US. 😳 Fortunately, we didn't become embroiled in a war. What's even crazier for me is that I actively took part in Carnival. Usually, I would avoid such events especially because it is waaayyy too loud for me. 🙉 But @berkeleycarnivalrevolution (a traditional Carnival band with super cool, friendly people) made it possible, taking care of me and making sure I'm safe and sound. 🥰 You rock, folks! The story is to be continued as we started to build a community of practice to keep on learning about circular sanitation and to start new projects in the field. (more in the comment section)
