Seven years ago, I met @mindywalder at our kids’ school mixer just before Archer started his freshman year at LACHSA. Mindy’s daughter, @rubylaks (now an international sensation, baby!) was a sophomore jazz drummer and vocalist and we all bonded immediately. COVID lockdown came soon after which was when we podded together and started mini jams in the living room with just our families.

In 2023, I threw a party that Ruby agreed to perform at and from there, started a series of summer jazz salons in my living room. We invited people — new friends and old, and every party had a different band and audience. People of all ages came to watch the kids jam. Brought food. Drink. Their dazzling personalities. We even had an open mic for poetry readings and acoustic sets.

Three+ years later, our oldest kids are now adults, working musicians (Ruby!), college seniors (Arch!) . They don’t live at home anymore but they visit. And when we can get everyone together, we keep this living room tradition going, something I hope we can do forever until death and maybe even after that.

It’s always a different crew, different performers and performances but @rubylaks is the heart and soul of the whole operation and last night half of the @the.beantones (@davinkingston @grant.heinman!) were here performing and @archerr.sage (who is now pursuing politics but still has the pipes!) got to jump in as fourth member.

I was rewatching videos this morning and realized lyrically this (first slide) is exactly how I feel about these amazing women and men who I have had the privilege of watching grow up in this house which is always half thrashed but “rocks with joy and laughter” and the brilliance of @rubylaks and co.

So thank you, Ruby for bringing all of these magical geniuses together and into our home three years ago and still. I love you and am so incredibly proud of you. 🥁🫰🔥♾️
