… URBAN PLANNING. . . . Allies & Morrison: Msheireb Downtown, Amiri Diwan Quarter (2010 - 2024), Doha, Qatar. . . . As I said in my September 17th post, Doha is IMHO the best looking city in the Gulf area (I haven't seen Kuwait City) due to a rather good average quality of the buildings, compared to the neighboring metropolises, and more importantly to the clear presence of an urban planning idea, that makes it more similar to Singapore than to Abu Dhabi, Manama or Dubai. . . . In this post the public buildings portion (Diwan Amiri Quarter) of Mshreib Downtown Doha, a vast urban redevelopment and requalification programme started in 2010 to redesign a 31 hectares area between the historic market of Souq Waqif and the Ruler's Palace. The masterplan and the the architecture of the buildings are the work of the British firm Allies & Morrison @alliesandmorrison and the promoting entity is @msheirebproperties, a subsidiary of @qatarfoundation, an entity established and sponsored by the ruling family. . . . In the first two pictures the Qatar National Archive, with its tower decorated by Arabic Calligraphy, to mark the function of the building. . . . In the following four pictures the Diwan Annex (the building of the Ruler's Offices) and the Amiri Guard Building, hosting the security corp of the Ruler. . . . in pictures 7 and 8 some of the residential building of the complex, overlooking the old Al Khoot Fort. . . . The architecture of the complex is declaredly inspired by the local vernacular architecture of the neighbouring Souq Waqif, but to my European eyes, it also echoes (succesfully) the rationalist european architecture of the XX century. . . . In the last four pictures the Amiri Diwan (Ruler's Palace), with lesser architectural quality IMHO, but very consistent with the Amiri Diwan Quarter from an urban planning point of view. . . . #doha #qatar #msheireb #msheirebdowntowndoha #amiridiwan #qatarnationalarchive #amiriguard #souqwaqif #alkhootfort #qatarfoundation #alliesandmorrison #alliesandmorrisonarchitects #arabiangulf #persiangulf #vernaculararchitecture #rationalistarchitecture #arabianarchitecture . .

【Save this for your next art & architecture tour in Tokyo!】 A brand-new art space, "seeen Harajuku", has just opened. Designed by sculptor Kohei Nawa and his creative platform "Sandwich", the building itself stands with the presence of a monumental sculpture. The louvered facade, conceptualized as "Shading Drapes", beautifully interacts with its surroundings and the blue sky through layers of shadows.  Starting November 1st, it will host its highly anticipated inaugural exhibition "At Random" by Kohei Nawa (Nov 1-28). The resonance between the sharp metal textures and the artworks will create a deeply immersive perceptual experience. A must-visit for architecture and art enthusiasts!  ■ Name: seeen Harajuku ■ Exhibition: Kohei Nawa "At Random" ■ Dates: Nov 1 - Nov 28, 2026 ■ Architect: Kohei Nawa / Sandwich ■ Location: 6-1-7 Jingumae, Shibuya-ku, Tokyo 150-0001 ■ Access: 1-2 min walk from Meiji-jingumae Sta. (Tokyo Metro) / 4-6 min walk from Harajuku Sta.
