URBAN PLANNING.
.
.
.
Allies & Morrison: Msheireb Downtown, Amiri Diwan Quarter (2010 - 2024), Doha, Qatar.
.
.
.
As I said in my September 17th post, Doha is IMHO the best looking city in the Gulf area (I haven't seen Kuwait City) due to a rather good average quality of the buildings, compared to the neighboring metropolises, and more importantly to the clear presence of an urban planning idea, that makes it more similar to Singapore than to Abu Dhabi, Manama or Dubai.
.
.
.
In this post the public buildings portion (Diwan Amiri Quarter) of Mshreib Downtown Doha, a vast urban redevelopment and requalification programme started in 2010 to redesign a 31 hectares area between the historic market of Souq Waqif and the Ruler's Palace. The masterplan and the the architecture of the buildings are the work of the British firm Allies & Morrison @alliesandmorrison and the promoting entity is @msheirebproperties, a subsidiary of @qatarfoundation, an entity established and sponsored by the ruling family.
.
.
.
In the first two pictures the Qatar National Archive, with its tower decorated by Arabic Calligraphy, to mark the function of the building.
.
.
.
In the following four pictures the Diwan Annex (the building of the Ruler's Offices) and the Amiri Guard Building, hosting the security corp of the Ruler.
.
.
.
in pictures 7 and 8 some of the residential building of the complex, overlooking the old Al Khoot Fort.
.
.
.
The architecture of the complex is declaredly inspired by the local vernacular architecture of the neighbouring Souq Waqif, but to my European eyes, it also echoes (succesfully) the rationalist european architecture of the XX century.
.
.
.
In the last four pictures the Amiri Diwan (Ruler's Palace), with lesser architectural quality IMHO, but very consistent with the Amiri Diwan Quarter from an urban planning point of view.

In this post a close view of the area (the skyline from the City centre is shown in my July 31st post), where the quality leader is definitely Jean Nouvel's Burj Doha (September 15th) flanked by several other important skyscraper such as the Al Jassimya Tower, the Palm Towers, the WTC Doha and the Al Mana Tower.

ENCORE NOUVEL.
.
.
.
Jean Nouvel @ateliersjeannouvel : Burj Doha - Doha Tower (2012), Doha, Qatar.
.
.
.
The Burj Doha is another extremely convincing work by Jean Nouvel, dominating the West Bay skyline, in front of the old city.
.
.
.
The building is remarkable for its bulletlike shape, reminding the Torre Glories in Barcelona by the same architect, and for its multi-layered exterior casing, mimicking traditional Islamic mashrabiya screens, which are engineered to protect the buildings’ interior from the intense sun.
.
.
.
The façade consists of four layers of aluminum panels featuring geometric patterns inspired by Islamic design. The density of the patterns varies according to the façade’s orientation: it is denser on the south side (where the sun is strongest) to reduce heat by 60%. Similarly to the dome of Louvre Abu Dhabi (July 15th and more to follow) the coating of the Doha Tower witnesses Nouvel’s care for climate efficiency, which is intimately coupled with style and technological mastery.

JEAN NOUVEL.

Jean Nouvel @ateliersjeannouvel : National Museum of Qatar @nmoqatar (2019), Doha, Qatar.
.
.
.
More pictures of the National Museum of Qatar, after the previous post of August 25th.
.
.
.
I have said that I consider Nouvel’s Louvre Abu Dhabi a masterpiece, combining aesthetic value, structural experimentation and functionality. See my posts of July 8th and 15th 2026.
.
.
.
The National Museum of Qatar, also designed by Jean Nouvel, in spite of being another impressive example of invention, innovation and technical mastery, is in my opinion less convincing.
.
.
.
Inspired to a desert rose, the building consists of over 500 discs. Each disc is s essentially a large 3D steel structure, arranged radially, which is then clad externally with extremely thin high-performance fibre-reinforced concrete panels.
.
.
.
The disc diameters and curvatures vary, and they intersect at constantly different angle. So the extraordinary thing is that the architectural geometry and the structural geometry are almost the same thing.
.
.
.
Having paid the due tribute to the extraordinary technical features of the building, I have to say that it’s beatiful, but gave me the impression to be conceived more to generate wonder than to be hoising collections, which are in fact far from being impressive (apart from some astounding jewels with pearls).

The new museum is built aside an old palace once inhabited by the Emir, to mark an intelligent continuity in the country history (see the last three pictures).

MOORISH DOME.

I.M. Pei: The Grand Hall of the Museum of Islamic Art (2008) @miaqatar Doha,Qatar. See my posts July 31st and June 26th this year.

The dome, explicitly citing decorative motifs of Islamic architecture, is the distinctive feature of the grand hall of the museum.
.
.
.
Stay tuned for further images of the museum.
