Thank you so much to @eng.literaryclub for inviting me to their Gothic event to talk about my short story, “Synthesis.” The story is about two lifelong best friends who move to New York to attend university together, connected by the memories they share and the films they work on. However, when they get the opportunity to submit their project to a screening, the unaddressed tensions simmering between them reach a boiling point of no return. Soon, the lines between reality and fiction are blurred, and real life begins to replicate the events of their film. I love thinking of ways to exaggerate and externalize the things we all may feel - isolation, sadness, and a fear of change. That’s mostly what this story is about, and I wrote it in Paris during my writing program when I was thinking about all the ways in which I was transforming. It’s exciting and scary and exhilarating, which is what I tried to capture here. I hope I will get more opportunities to talk about my fiction in the future! 🫶

Book of February 2024 Review by Club Member @archivalsofmia “The Midnight Library” by Matt Haig revolves around Nora Seed and her exploration of regret, choice, and the meaning of happiness. Although the book reads as Young-Adult Fiction, it has elements of Fantasy and Sci-Fi, which the author uses as tools to write about the human condition. Stuck in a limbo between Life and Death, Nora finds herself in a fantastical place called “The Midnight Library,” where she can explore all of her ‘possible lives’ based on her lifestyle choices. I think it’s a brilliant idea for a novel, but the author wasn’t able to do justice to the plot. It becomes predictable in the second half of the book, and I think it could use more gripping and pivotal events that shape Nora’s perspective on life. Her character falls flat and remains static throughout the novel, which feels like wasted potential as themes like regret, identity, mental health, self-acceptance, and gratitude are extremely relevant to the readers. Overall, the novel makes a decent, albeit simplified attempt to talk about important subjects with slight philosophical touches. I’d really only recommend it to young adults as it’s a mere introduction to adulting and the human condition.
