Sometimes, an open-concept floor plan isn’t the answer.

For our Richmond kitchen renovation, the clients wanted to establish a distinct identity for the kitchen while maintaining a connection to the adjacent family room. Our solution was a diaphanous partition that subtly defines each space while preserving an open, visually connected experience.

SDK Tip: give every room a reason before you pick a material or finish.

This Chevy Chase home shows how:
Whisky room: conversation & pours.
Powder room: drama for guests.
Kitchen: designated zones for cooks and little diners.
Primary suite: storage and ease.

Sydney gave each room its own job with one point-of-view that ties them all together.

Matching is easy. Agreement requires a plan.

Sydney’s full philosophy in print. Featured in Modern Home Builders, she outlines how luxury appears in residential design: functionally planned and authentically rooted in story, resulting in a home that works harder, lives better, and stands the test of time.

A decade of Colors of the Year, and Sydney believes Upward (SW 6239) earns its keep. This pale blue hue with gray undertones can both hold its own or accentuate something bolder.

Sydney wields Upward as a fresh alternative to traditional neutrals, transforming any room into a retreat.

What a true honor and excitement to see my designs in @baltmag ✨✨✨

Baltimore is where we started our family, where we now call home and where I started this business.

I love what I do everyday and it’s the clients and the people that I work with that make it feel so fulfilling and rewarding.

Thank you @momoffour30 for this beautiful feature ! Truly honored !!!

And to @andyschwartz_ for the gorgeous photos.

And of course to #unpaidassistant (mom) for her help on photo shoot days (and in life)

A little bathroom moment we love 🤍💙

Soft blue subway tile, polished marble, and a beautifully detailed arched opening come together to make this tub and shower feel like its own little retreat. The mix of classic materials and thoughtful architectural details gives this bathroom a timeless feel while still feeling fresh and inviting.

Some houses need saving from their own renovations. From restoring an entry hallway’s period casings to anchoring the kitchen with a surprising slab, Sydney took on a 1918 house and gave it back the historic charm it lost along the way.

Every hardworking mudroom deserves a loyal supervisor.

This defined drop zone does the heavy lifting. A built-in bench paired with hooks so coats, bags, and pet gear all have a place. Rusticated tile underfoot is tough enough for muddy paws.

A vintage dresser, thoughtfully reimagined as a one-of-a-kind vanity, is the heart of this charming guest bathroom. Paired with timeless wallpaper, classic marble flooring, and warm brass accents, this space proves that the best designs blend character with function.

The Dry Lay

Before natural stone is installed, every box should be opened and every piece laid out across the floor.

Natural stone is packed randomly, and each box contains a wide range of veining, movement, and color. Without opening every box and blending those variations throughout the installation, it’s easy to end up with heavy, blotchy sections of dramatic veining in one area and quieter stone in another.

A proper dry lay allows the interior designer and installer to work together, thoughtfully arranging each piece to create balance across the entire space. The designer considers the overall composition—where the eye travels, how the veining flows from piece to piece, and where the most striking slabs should be showcased—while the installer executes the layout with precision.

It’s one of those details most homeowners never see, but it’s one of the clearest signs of a quality installation. The difference is rarely the material—it’s how it’s composed.

Beautiful homes are built in the details.

This shower could’ve played it safe. Instead, tile takes the risk. Full checkerboard, warm ochre against cream, antique nickel in the background. Everyday spaces end up surprising, thanks to open-minded clients.
