Recieved this in the mail...... I got a call one night from Jacob Torres, NASA contract scientist, telling me he had just got granted a mission to grow Española chile peppers in space. Excited as can be he proceeded to express his dream of having Española youth artists come up with prototype drawings that he can present to NASA in hope's of NASA connecting with the idea. This thought was way out of NASA's norm. Jacob asked me if I would consider putting a team together that saw value in this project. I accepted the challenge. I quickly connected with McCurdy Art Teacher Camilla Martin and local renowned artist Toby Morfin. They both were thrilled with the challenge as well. After putting the word out to many youth within the community, three young ladies stepped up to the challenge. Those young ladies were Jade Madrid, Brianna Archuleta and Siri Aaudi Khalsa. These three young ladies put their heart and soul into every phase of this project working hard for a period of 18 months and a pandemic. It was drawing after drawing after drawing until we were confident enough to present the works to NASA.... and NASA LOVED what they saw. Toby, Camilla and myself worked hard at mentoring the three young ladies throughout the 18 months all while being guided by Jacob. In the end we were able to make history on many different levels with this mission-within-the-mission. Below is the official badge created by Brianna Archuleta that represents the mission Jacob and his teammates led to grow Española chile peppers in space!!! Congratulations to Jade, Brianna and Siri for their hard work!!!!.... and congratulations to Jacob and his team for placing the Española chile pepper as the first crops to ever be harvested in space. MISSION ACCOMPLISHED!! #EspanolaMakingHistory
