Happy Thanksgiving Weekend, all! This gem may be technically be in Amurrca, but the drive’s basically outskirts-of-Ottawa so who’s really counting? Ithaca is absolutely stunning this time of year - Robert H. Treman State Park, with its light leaks, stone footbridges, waterfalls and fiery leaves being a highlight - so if you get the chance for a slumber party at @firelightcamps or @argosinn, highly recommend you make like the Sugarhill Gang and jump on it. #escapetoronto

A term we like to use in preservation is “adaptive reuse”. It’s one thing to save or preserve a building, but then what? It’s also the reason we like to use the word “rehab” instead of “restore”. Frankly, most older buildings just can’t perform the role they were originally built for. Meaning, not every beautiful historic house can become a house museum, we need practical solutions and creative community members. @argosinn is a shining example of successful adaptive reuse in action.
.
Originally the Cowdrey House, it was a residential mansion built in 1831 by Jacob M. McCormick and was predominantly lived in by the Cowdrey family. It’s an incredible Greek Revival with details on the façade including entablature and gable returns that are parallel to the street and massive stone lintels and sills. We have a lot of documents about this building and Ithaca in general thanks to longtime resident Belle Cowdrey (seriously, look her up. She’s such a trip). After Belle’s death in 1922, it switched hands a lot - hosting several businesses and nonprofits. It was purchased by the current owner in 2009 and transformed into our beloved boutique hotel through extensive and painstakingly appropriate interior and exterior renovation.

In 2017, The Preservation League of New York State (@preservenys) selected the Argos Inn to receive their award for Excellence in Historic Preservation.

#springwrites Ithaca finished with two beloved local authors—Leslie Daniels and Bob Proehl—reading other local writers’ as-yet unpublished work.
•
I am a die-hard fan of Rhian Ellis’s AFTER LIFE (post on this one coming tomorrow, which sort of breaks my Bloomsbury diet but is relevant to novel-in-progress because... supernatural, masterfully done).
So I _had_ to hear my gurl Leslie read new work by Ellis, excerpts from a novel told in first person by...Alice B. Toklas. I know...
•
Ellis uses such exquisitely delicious phrases as “the hot, garlicky breath of restaurants” to evoke Toklas’s first sensory impressions of Paris.
•
Swipe left for one lovely sentence from a chapter about ‘that which is not told’...
•
It can be nerve-wracking, in addition to hugely gratifying, to hear one’s own (hard-won) words read in the voice of another (having recently been there, at my own humble book launch in March...). Which is likely why Rhian (swipe left once again) is tugging at her hair—she needn’t have worried, we were all smitten.
•
And having your words read and discussed by Leslie D. is one of the most exquisite pleasures I know...
•
Some (paraphrased) LD choice phrases and mots (tous bons, bien sur):
*reading is basically a dance of seduction—are you (reader) going to let that book seduce you? Let it take you home tonight?...
•
By the end of the reading, I think everyone in that room would have let Rhian Ellis take her or him pretty much wherever she wanted to.
