June in Toronto > SF > Toronto

Toronto’s precious summer is winding down and I’m about to spend the last moments of it back in SF. Here’s an ode to the month where I reconnected with friends, met a whole slew of new ones, and welcomed my first visitors to the city (Tali and later my sister). I revisited some of my old haunts, started to frequent some new ones, and really felt like I was able to start settling in to my cozy apartment.

I had a few firsts - going to a Jays game, the National ballet, dance class, attending Electric Island, and finally owning tabis (thanks to Scott bringing me gifts of shoes and Le Beurre Bordier from Paris). We also celebrated my Auntie Yoly’s last day in the rehab facility she had spent the month at learning to walk at again and moving her into our house so we could take better care of her.

Re-establishing one’s life at age 41 in a city you left as a child is by no means easy (especially when layered atop the responsibilities of caring for family) but I feel so grateful for the people and communities that have folded me in and made me feel right at home. All in all, a fruitful time split between my two homes.

40th Birthday Party 11/8/24 - 11/16/24

Tokyo > Iya Valley > Naoshima & Teshima > Sakudaira

Last November, after 1.5 years of planning and logistics, as well as after a debilitating autoimmune flare (not to mention a horrible election cycle) I somehow managed to get myself and 14 of my dear friends to join me on a weeklong adventure throughout Japan in celebration of my 40th birthday. Powered entirely by sheer willpower, prednisone, and painkillers, I miraculously survived a week of traveling through 4 prefectures on planes, trains, automobiles, and boats.
.
None of this could have been possible without the help of my beloved family @oursndtrks_miked @chihonolimavis @nono.jp.us @suisuilily who curated the perfect Nagano day for us full of sake tasting, excellent food, and gorgeous surroundings. Also thank you to new friends Sean and Aki in Iya Valley, who helped me plan the festivities with such detail. @bobbychinn and Mason, thank you for the unexpectedly wise life advice and the most random night a girl could have ever asked for. I’m still cackling.
.
Of course, a massive debt of gratitude to those who flew across the world to join me, even if for a day or two of overlap. I was legitimately suffering, but you still managed to support me and make me laugh and smile through the pain. Thank you for all the memories and the love @lexingtonstandard @arguna @dardendiana @000andfff Lucas @abaconsbits @realdebonis @zolodome @twsmine @hirokoha @tiffjan @dirk_darling @thefussyflyer @momocelestial

Finally, an extra special shout out to the love of my life, @scottdavisonline for dragging my husk of a body around and making sure I took my medicine every day.

If there is one thing we have learned about the past year and all of its horrors and challenges, it is that one is absolutely nothing without community. I am so proud to have all of you as part of mine.

🎉 Here’s to 36! 🎉

Another year gone by and another trip around the sun. This year has taught me a lot. There have been both highs and lows but I’m so thankful for the friends that have supported me along the way.

Dry January turned into a year of no alcohol. It allowed me time to reflect, to be present for every moment and to find new hobbies. I also landed a new job where I can be creative and collaborate with other creatives.

Each year I grow and become a better version of myself. I’m grateful for the friends in my life who I consider family. All in all it’s been a year to remember and I’m looking forward to creating more memories in the year ahead.

Thank you for all of the birthday wishes and love on this special day! ❤️
