We need a Monroe County Commissioner who will protect the Key Deer & uphold the uniqueness of the Keys

Why should you vote for Jorge (George) Lopez?

Here’s his answer to a Keys publication:

“What made you decide to run for public office? As many in Monroe county, I sense a need for Change. Without change government becomes complacent. I stepped forward to lead because Monroe County needs experienced, leadership that’s not limited to government experience, but importantly proven private sector experience with a history of desired results. I am committed to improving affordability, strengthening accountability, and providing meaningful tax and insurance relief.

I will protect and defend our fragile environment including our latest Big Pine Key CDL development threat to our fragile Key deer habitat Cutting burdensome county expensive regulations that hurt small businesses are a must. I will stand up for our essential workers, first responders, and veterans, and ensure our underserved seniors and children receive the support they deserve.”

Key Deer will be prevented from utilizing the rural 10 acre site full of vegetation and water resources (sinks) owned by the College of the Florida Keys

And while the college spent time and money on new security camera, fencing, and locks, none could be put towards a passageway for endangered Key Deer.

Does these mean old development plans are being revitalized that would bulldoze much of the property? The college should come forward with any such ideas.

It is unfortunate to see wild animals denied space within such an already small and limited area.

This is 100% endangered animal habitat whether it’s for Key Deer or Key Marsh Rabbit, or potentially the rare indigo and Ringneck snakes on the island.

Nearly extinct corals and iconic reefs could face massive losses so researchers and marine conservation efforts are working nonstop

Tons of corals in ocean nurseries are being taken onshore, to deeper water, or put under shade to limit bleaching effects bright by warming water

This happened in 2023, but far more corals were wiped out. And now Staghorn and Elkhorn corals must not only make it thought this heatwave, but be restored within the “Mission Iconic Reefs” program by NOAA and many Keys’ partners.

Quickly, regulations to move nursing corals were overhauled by the marine Federal partners so the Florida Keys could act.

Be sure to check out @protectourreefs @missioniconicreefs @rescueareef @miamiwaterkeeper and many others for more info 🪸

A herd of Key Deer are trapped at the moment, please urge the College of the Florida Keys to properly hasten their transport, or (and better) install a corridor for the animals to utilize the area

Down in the Florida Keys, in a plot of land the college wants to work on and develop, has Key Deer that are trapped by a fence designed to keep people out. However, now the deer are trapped, and it appears that efforts to transport them have been delayed for too long.

Furthermore, it would be better for a corridor or soft gate to be utilized so that way the deer can still feed and utilize the area.

Click the new link in my bio to sign a petition that’ll automatically contact your Senator.

The fact sheets and petition campaign was created by @tannerunderwater and other divers trying to protect Florida Shark Diving

And let’s be clear: Depredation and Shark Attacks will not change with a targeted ban on shark diving

Sharks are already drawn into fishing vessels by bait, struggling catches, and chum. It’s not the fault of shark diving.

Shark attacks regularly and most commonly happen at the shore or near it, not 3 miles out where shark diving is permitted.

And if anyone is drawing sharks close to shore it’s fishermen, not divers who are 3 miles out.

This ban is a misguided attempt of a distant Capitol seeking to appease misconceptions that if acted on, harm conservation, tourism, and education.

And it’s part of Florida’s history. SAVE FLORIDA SHARK DIVING🦈

The consequences of this ban will be:

- A boom of tourism to our island neighbor, The Bahamas

- A loss of an entire ecotourism industry

- Likely increases in shark depredation

- Increase in unnoticed shark fishing behavior

- No change in shark fatalities and attacks in Florida

- Increase in shark misconceptions

- Decrease in shark conservation

We don’t have a Wild & Free Florida when we start banning everything

That’s why I’ve been against attempts to curb already-regulated outdoor recreation.

The proponents of bans generally harp on misconceptions.

Sharks will still take bites off your catches. Shark attacks will still happen.

Who’s putting the blame on shark diving and why?

Imagine Big Pine & No Name PAVED OVER ‼️

We had a victory by pushing Monroe County to hold this meeting, and now we have to show up to save the Keys 🦌

The decades old and development-limiting Habitat Conservation Plan that covers Big Pine and No Name is expiring, we need the county to uphold it for another year AND create a new set of protections that similarly safeguard it for the next many, many, many decades.

Please watch the video to learn more and if you can’t make the meeting, please send calls and emails to the Monroe County Commissioners!
