POSTS STORIES REELS TAGGED

This is a first report of our experience with gravel 32”.

We’ll start by emphasizing that the bicycle has not been reinvented, and that nothing we know is obsolete. BUT, if you are looking for something different, this is it. We are not going into scientific claims about speed, but more about feelings. There is also much to dial in with tire choice, which will affect handling and feel. For now, with the beefiest 32”x2.4 tires, it is clear that this is a different kind of ride.

Our first bike, built by Ari, is set up for Ben. He has already done a few rides and has no doubt that this is the bike he’s been waiting for. He says he will get rid of all his 700c bikes (let’s see). He describes the ride as extremely stable at high speeds, with incredible traction when cornering. He even managed to set some PRs on trails he has been riding for the last couple of years! Ben is 100% sold on the 32” feel.

Ari tried the bike for the first time yesterday. It was obvious from the start that the bike wants to go forward. At high speed it feels slow, but then you look at the Garmin and the numbers tell a different story. Cornering is surprisingly easy, and it feels so safe to lean the bike. Ruts and rocks are felt, but they seem less noticeable.

After the first loop, Ari’s impression was that it felt slightly boring and dead. But interestingly, getting back on his own front-suspension 700x50 titanium bike suddenly felt really weird and slightly scary. After a loop on his own bike he took another spin on the 32”. This time he pushed it a bit more, and it was clear there was more to get out of the bike than he managed on the first ride. It grew on him during that short test.

His conclusion: an optimized riding position, and maybe smaller/faster tires, is very tempting.

We will try to do some pseudo-clinical speed tests in the near future. Until then, we are both convinced that this is a very interesting new option, and, no doubt, a no-brainer for taller riders.

More to follow.

Lots of titanium welding lately at Benben, and more to come. Custom geometry and size with 3D printed titanium frame parts, beautiful work by @aricycles
