Epic day yesterday, as we installed two French drains between our tunnels to help with runoff. This team hauled 12 yards of pea gravel, mostly with wheelbarrows and shovels. 💪🏼 🙌🏼 Glad today is an office day!!

In classic facebook album from 2007 style, here are the disposable camera photos from me, Lizzy, and Brittany's 40th birthday party. Six months might be the ultimate record for me dragging out a birthday.

So long sweet summer.

The Internet’s a highlight reel and since we’re on the internet, we’ve made our own 🤪 It was actually really helpful for me to put together some of the joyful moments from the summer and make it look like a cute lil’ movie. The daily bullshit of farming, parenting, adulting, and witnessing the gutting of America make life hard, but the good stuff of life exists right in the midst of it all.

Seven years of soft serve swirls, cheese pulls, river days, and wild summer rushes — but more than anything, seven years of 𝘱𝘦𝘰𝘱𝘭𝘦 who’ve made it all possible.

This place runs on hustle, heart, and heaps of teamwork. From the prep crew loading the smoker at sunrise to the closing team locking things down at dusk — thank you. You’ve made magic happen every day, one service at a time.

We’re proud of this team — because what they pull off every day is no small feat. Three sundaes, two sandwiches, and 5 covers EVERY MINUTE with grace and energy. That’s NUTS, and it takes focus, speed, and serious heart to make it through a Sugarpine summer — this crew does it with grit, humor, and an unwavering commitment to quality.

A VERY SPECIAL SHOUTOUT to Joshua Chang (@pdxploration) — our photographer since day one. Over the years, we’ve tackled more than 50 full-day photoshoots together, crafting over 25,000 finished photos. Through his lens, Josh has helped shape how the world sees Sugarpine.

Josh recently moved back home to O‘ahu with his family, and while we’re sad to see him go, we know we’ll see him again soon. He’s left a meaningful mark on Portland’s food community — shining a light on countless independent restaurants and local businesses with the same care, thoughtfulness, and eye for beauty that he brought to every Sugarpine shoot.

We are deep into the radicchio seeding season in the PNW and I'm so excited to see the return of my absolute favorite crop. Here is the second succession of radicchio that was seeded a couple of weeks ago. Next week, I have my last and biggest seeding of all the late varieties including that pink one y'all love. At this point, I mostly only grow varieties from @uprising.seeds through the @progetto_gusto_italiano project (seed breed/grown by @smarties.bio ). It's so well adapted to our region, the germination is very reliable and the heads are uniform and gorgeous.

The field is being prepped for their big transplant day in about three weeks!! This area was cover cropped, then mowed, tarped for over a month then harrowed. The soil texture is incredible and by gently incorporating the cover crop, we are working towards improved soil health.

While I love Summer the most, I do look forward to frost kissed radicchio in the late Fall into Winter.

Yeah, I'm obsessed. This year I'm only farming an acre and half and I will plant over a 1/4 acre in radicchio. Sorry. Not sorry.

Happy Solstice to all my summer lovers out there! This is calm before the storm in the season. I’ve been crawling around on hands and knees in my field, trying to make sense of all the cruelty in the world. Yikes! Get out into the streets, if you can, my friends.

This is how I feel about being done with tulip season. They’re beautiful, but they really do suck! Pretty much every stem needs to be picked right on time and not have any affliction or fungus or hailstorm in order to make a meager profit. I’m curious what the tulip landscape will look like next year with tariffs. Each year more of my flower farmer friends get out of the tulip hustle game. I don’t know how many times this season I muttered “f*ck these tulips!”

April is not for the faint of heart. Overflowing prop houses and then weather uncertainty, then spring heat waves and an explosion of blooms. I’m in high gear over here and the month is not over yet… and then at the end of the whole thing, I’m turning 40! What gives?! Please drop your words of advice for this aging farmer. I don’t want my limbs to fall off and I want to keep farming till Im boots up in my field at some ripe old age.

Sorry, not sorry for all of these llama pictures. Today, @foffinthefield and friends marched to the state capitol because Small Farms Mean Business! We spoke with our representatives about small farm water access, disaster resiliency grants, state meat processing facilities, and more. The capitol was a flurry of activity and it was empowering to meet our representatives and talk issues that impact our livelihoods. Fingers crossed that it made a positive impact on future votes. We got to hug @caesarthenodramallama as a sweet bonus!
