it’s been a month since I co-organized and facilitated this full-day summit as part of @womenontherise.ca, and I still have moments of wondering how the heck somebody like me got to stand up there with eight of victoria’s coolest leaders and see our ideas materialize into this day.

during our second workshop, ā€œeveryday leadership,ā€ I got a little vulnerable in sharing my nonlinear education and career path - from spending six years in post-secondary yet never actually earning a formal degree (I used the words ā€œdicking around in schoolā€ in front of a room full of professionals and I’m wondering if I’ll ever learn to properly prepare a speech so I don’t say shit like that off the cuff - but also it’s kind of on-brand for me at this stage), to dabbling in more than ten different industries before deciding that my niche is actually no niche at all and I’m actually quite adept at having my hands in multiple projects at one time, to building my own team from scratch, starting a contracting business, and finding myself in a position of influence through leading and facilitating workshops, connecting women, and planning events.

I used to look at people who follow the traditional path: high school, uni, internship, corporate ladder climber - and convince myself that because of my circumstances, tough experiences, and, let’s be honest, questionable life choices, I’d never be a person who’s voice, ideas, or opinions mattered. but what I did know is I was extraordinarily passionate about coaching others to find their purpose, their why, their strength, their motivation, their passions, and their drive. I love helping others get curious about their strengths and bringing them forward to achieve their big, hairy, audacious goals - to me that’s great leadership.

at first I took a ā€œfake it til you make itā€ approach.I showed up to the networking events and attended the workshops. I dressed the part. I listened and I watched and I asked a lot of probably stupid questions. I used every penny my company’s education fund to take courses and took free certifications to upskill my expertise and I put myself forward for opportunities that scared the shit out of me.
