Yet another crazy trip to the land of the free and home of the brave in the books🇺🇸

So much has happened in the past 8 days that it feels like it’s been 8 weeks. Mostly good and happy shit, but unfortunately also some sad and shitty shit. It’s all good though - part of the job.

The @rogueinvitational was an excellent event - as per usual. The weather did not really have the Texas charm that we have come used to in recent years and it did give the event organizers some headaches but all in all a great event and I’m ever so proud of all of the 9 competing athletes my agency represents.

From Austin I hauled to Los Angeles for a long awaited world domination strategy session with Hunter McIntyre whom I’ve worked with since January but had not met in the flesh until yesterday. What a man! I also dropped in casually at the Red Bull HQ in Santa Monica, as one does when in the neighborhood.

All in all a great trip but damn I am ready to go home and get back into to routine💪🏼

When Ari Hurst was younger, she sometimes felt embarrassed to tell people she was a diabetic.

She felt stigmatized, and sometimes frustrated, as many people didn’t realize the difference between Type 1 and Type 2 diabetes.

Oftentimes, people were shocked to find out Hurst had Type 1 diabetes, as they didn’t understand that, unlike Type 2 diabetes, Type 1 is a genetic condition that often shows up earlier in life that attacks your insulin-producing cells in your pancreas, and cannot easily be controlled by diet and lifestyle.

“No it isn’t just diet and exercise…No matter what I eat, I’m still going to have to take insulin, because my pancreas no longer functions,” she said.

Today Hurst, now 31, realizes that instead of feeling stigmatized, it’s more valuable for her to talk about diabetes, to educate people about the disease, and even to raise money to find a cure.

This is exactly what she will be doing this fall, when she embarks on a 100-mile bike race in Death Valley, CA.

✨35 may be my best year yet with these friends by my side! These beautiful friends of mine planned a wonderful surprise birthday weekend for me! I shed tears of joy when I saw Amanda at my front door Saturday morning all the way from Nashville. We had a great day of fun and catching up! Then Alicia surprised us at the hotel when we were getting ready for dinner and then I was shocked when we showed up to dinner and my sister and friends were waiting at the table! I am so beyond thankful for these amazing friends and for a sister who is an amazing planner who loves to shower her sister with love 🥰 And a big shout out to my best guy for holding down the fort at home and keeping the secret from me for a month! I love you all!! #thisis35🎉 #surprisesarethebest #bestsisteraround #bestfriends #sothankful

Type 1 diabetes (T1D) is a full-time job that I’ll be doing for the rest of my life. Luckily, I found CrossFit more than 10 years ago, and with the sport, technology, and gaining knowledge about food and fitness, my condition has become more manageable.

Having T1D means my pancreas doesn’t produce any insulin to regulate my glucose levels. So, things like listening to my body, counting carbohydrates, and knowing how to refuel after workouts are not just good ideas but essential for my health.

To keep my glucose levels in a healthy range, I calculate my insulin dosages and wear a continuous glucose monitor (CGM), my Dexcom, that keeps tabs on my levels by sending the readings to my cell phone.

While many see diabetes as a setback — don’t get me wrong, it has its moments — it’s helped me learn valuable lessons that make me not just a better CrossFit athlete, but a healthier person.

Here are five things I’ve learned as a Type 1 diabetic that you can apply to your everyday CrossFit routine.

Be intentional
Check your ego
Have a game plan
Find a support system
Invest in yourself
