![Something I hear a lot from actors is that hiring a HMUA for headshots feels like an unnecessary luxury. And I get it, I really do. Headshots are expensive, and it’s tempting to cut costs wherever you can. But after a decade as a MUA specializing in actor headshots, I REALLY want to encourage you that professional HMU is one of the best investments you can make in your shoot. Here are my top 5 reasons why:
1. You get to focus on being an actor—not your appearance.
The morning of your shoot should be spent getting into the right headspace, reviewing your goals, arriving to your shoot on time, and connecting with your photographer—not wondering if your foundation is separating or if your curls are behaving. Especially in the blazing NYC summer, not having to worry about arriving to your shoot camera-ready will save you SO much time, energy, and worry in the long run.
2. Makeup for on-camera is different than makeup for real life.
Studio lighting, camera settings, and high-resolution photography all change the way makeup reads. A professional, especially an artist who is familiar with your photographer, knows how to create dimension that looks natural on camera, not just in the mirror.
3. Branding matters.
Whether you’re shooting multiple looks or updating your portfolio over time, having a professional create polished, cohesive looks helps your gallery feel intentional and brand-specific.
4. We notice the details you can’t!
Flyaways. Lipstick on your teeth. Collar sitting funny. Shine that suddenly appears between looks. I’m constantly making dozens of tiny adjustments throughout the session so you don’t have to worry about a thing.
5. You’ll walk away feeling more confident. 🫶🏻
My biggest hope is that my presence will free you up to take risks, play, and be present. And that’s usually when the strongest images happen.
At the end of the day, great headshots aren’t about looking “more beautiful” or trying to be a certain type. They’re about removing distractions so the first thing casting notices is YOU. 🥰
Save this for the next time you’re planning a headshot session. 🫶🏻✨
