my train from Berlin to Amsterdam got a 3hours extra delay. (Still moving!) Meanwhile, as our travelling exhibition comes to an end, I am sharing a few moments from setting up our exhibition at the Berlin University of the Arts (#UdK) as well some of my contributions to our course ‘void is not empty’ <<Artistic expression as tools of protest>> We explored how artistic and architectural practices can question dominant narratives, while proposing alternative understanding, engaging with urban space. <<From theoretical, conceptual research to material production>> We worked with a methodology that started with critical thinking, research, to experimentation, and artistic expression. I shaped the course structure, from its initial planning and theoretical references to the development of its assignments. <<Urban Voids>> The void is never empty, but framed. When a space is labelled an “urban void”, the term itself frames how we perceive the space. This often justifies exploitation, occupation, or transformation. This framing becomes the first step towards projecting another idea onto the space(such as capital-driven redevelopment), despite the many existing functions, relationships, and values that often go unnoticed. This perspective was inspired from Samia Henni’s book, Deserts Are Not Empty. Throughout the course, we focus on the “quality of the void”: What qualities already exist? How can they be recognised and strengthened? And how might they become more accessible and meaningful as part of public space? it was the students who truly materialised these questions and challenges. Seeing how deeply the topic resonated with us, and how we translated our shared perspectives into such diverse and powerful works, was motivating. @azado33, Evaline Vink, @studio.ollo, @jordidoomen, @julietmanrho, @laassharaf, @lloydvanpelt, @adventures_on_tap, @sini.huttunen, @arirohde, @larg.mov, @sebuku______, Tessa Paulus Special thanks to co-teacher @jolenelee___ for bringing Tempelhofer Feld as a central topic and for sharing her knowledge as our thematic expert. Many thanks as well to @architects4thf for sharing the exhibition space with us at UdK! @academievanbouwkunst

Some impressions from the opening of Looking over the Fence: Void is Not Empty at @architectuurcentrum_amsterdam last month, curated by @minnarilee and me. What started as a semester at the @academievanbouwkunst has now continued into a travelling exhibition, bringing discussions around urban voids, public space, housing pressure, and collective futures into a wider public context. We are currently looking for venue sponsors in Berlin to host this speculative and educational exhibition in Autumn 2026. If you are interested in hosting us, please reach out via DM or email at jolene.lee@ahk.nl 📩 The travelling exhibition will continue at @ahkcultureclub this Thursday, 21 May! All further information can be found via: linktr.ee/voidisnotempty Great works by the participating students: @azado33 #evalinevink @studio.ollo @jordidoomen @julietmanrho @laassharaf @lloydvanpelt @adventures_on_tap @sini.huttunen from @academievanbouwkunst / #arirohde @larg.mov @sebuku______ from @royalacademyofart.thehague / Furniture production with @martijn_troost / Photos by @cheong.park #urbanism #architecture #urbanvoid

Five days left before our exhibition closes at ARCAM: <Looking over the Fence: Void is Not Empty> You can visit the exhibition until 3 May 2026. We collectively explore urban voids in different contexts. Urban voids are the leftover spaces of the modern city, born from chaotic growth and abandoned, in most cases, industrial functions (Andrea Di Giovanni). From sites next to Paradiso to Hamerkwartier Amsterdam, and Tempelhofer Feld Berlin, we reimagine ‘empty’ as potential, not absence, but possibility as ecological corridors, democratic spaces, and hidden histories. 9 projects. 9 perspectives driven by curiosity, critical thinking, and imagination. We begin as architectural discourse, and then in-depth research evolved into a series of experimental and artistic expressions that challenge how we define urban voids. Thanks to @jolenelee___ who made this exhibition possible together. @janna_bystrykh who assembled this amazing team for P5O5 course at @academievanbouwkunst, and for this beautiful venue support from @architectuurcentrum_amsterdam. The title was inspired by Samia Henni’s Deserts Are Not Empty, and thanks to her for allowing us to use this :) Great works from the participated students: @azado33 Evaline Vink, @studio.ollo @jordidoomen @julietmanrho @laassharaf @lloydvanpelt @adventures_on_tap @sini.huttunen at Academy of Architecture Amsterdam/ @arirohde @larg.mov @sebuku______ / Royal Academy of Arts, The Hague(@royalacademyofart.thehague )/ Furniture production with @martijn_troost / Photo credit: @cheong.park
