There are few gifts greater than a teacher, mentor, coach, friend or community who believes in you during the seasons when you’re having a hard time believing in yourself.

Yesterday I was inducted into Comsewogue’s Hall of Fame. I graduated class of 2012, and if you knew me then, you probably never would’ve guessed this would happen.

On my first day, I cried in my dad’s car, terrified to walk into a school full of strangers. I struggled with anxiety, missed a lot of school, got into a little trouble 😂 and spent a lot of those years wanting to disappear and dreaming of being anywhere but Long Island.
And yet, there were people here who saw me anyway.

Years later, I even returned to these halls for a photo shoot with the incredible Sean Thomas and some of the students. Truly a full-circle moment I’ll never forget.

I’ve learned there is so much courage in allowing yourself to be known, sharing your dreams, your fears, your uncertainty and letting people show up for you. Some of the people I was once afraid to be seen by became the people who helped me see myself more clearly.

To Comsewogue, Mrs. Antelo, Mr. Coniglione, Mrs. Esposito, Mrs. Joseph, Mr. Sutherland, my besties Karina and Ana and my family who saw me, encouraged me, and never gave up on me: thank you. I love you. Thank you. This is such an honor and I dont take it lightly.

And to any kid struggling to make their way through school: who you are in this moment is not the limit of who you can become. There are people who want to know you, believe in you, and help you find your way. Sometimes the bravest thing you can do is let yourself be seen.

I remember wearing heels to school because I was trying to manifest walking a runway one day. I’m sure I looked like a newborn baby deer learning how to stand 😂 but alas, we made it.

So grateful for another trip around the sun and for all the love I received yesterday. Thank you for the birthday wishes, kind words and everyone who continues to be part of my life. My heart is full. 💕✨

We’re coming to @bigskydocfest! Congratulations to THE GRIND director @danchen & producer @eric.b.cook for being accepted into the Big Sky Pitch competition! As the main event of the DocShop Filmmaker’s Forum, the pitch provides an exceptional opportunity for filmmakers to present feature-length works-in-progress to top funders and commissioning editors.
Our team members @neuhaus and @nadolnytara will be joining the conversation as part of DocShop to talk resilience and longevity within the independent filmmaking landscape.

We also had the chance to speak with @nathantruesdell about his project WATCH THE CIRCUS BURN through our Fresh Eyes initiative, which will be joining the pitch competition!

And... the incredible @thevideokideo (editor for the hotlisted @earthtomichael.film) will be pitching THE ELEPHANT IN THE ROOM.

We are so grateful to be in community with so many incredible artists and innovators!

Opening this Wednesday, October 23, ‘Soft Spaces’ is a series of micro-exhibitions featuring works by alumni of the Leslie-Lohman Museum Artist Fellowship. The Artist Fellowship is an international and intergenerational program of mentorship and collective learning that has centered LGBTQIA+ artists of color since its inception in 2017. Through professional development workshops and critical seminars by artists and theorists, the Fellowship supports participants as they develop the skills to establish a sustainable art practice while radically affirming identities through liberatory pedagogy.

The first ‘Soft Spaces’ exhibition features LLMA Artist Fellows, María José Maldonado @saymariajose and Arisleyda Dilone @arisleyda.

Soft Spaces is curated by LLMA Assistant Curator and Exhibitions Manager, Chloe Ming.

Yesterday was the first student presentation and facilitation of the semester in my Citizen Participation in Latin America class and they were amazing of course. And then we had another gem in my Queer and Feminist Theories class with our guest lecturer intersex Dominican American documentarian Arisleyda Diloné (@arisleyda). I love my job!

Ayer tuvimos la primera presentación y facilitación de la clase por mis estudiantes en mi clase de Participación Ciudadana en América Latina y por supuesto estuvieron espectaculares. Y luego, en mi clase de Teorías Queer y Feministas tuvimos la joyita que fue la conferencia invitada de la documentalista intersex dominico-estadounidense Arisleyda Diloné. ¡Me encanta mi trabajo!
