🎉 Congratulations to Dr. Genesis Arizmendi! 🎉 We are excited to congratulate Dr. Genesis Arizmendi, one of our Neuroscience & Cognitive Science (NSCS) faculty members, on receiving the Early Career Scholar Award at the 2026 University of Arizona Distinguished Faculty Awards ceremony on September 23, 2026! 🧠✨ Dr. Arizmendi is an Assistant Professor in Speech, Language, and Hearing Sciences with a joint appointment in Cognitive Science and teaches courses supporting both Speech, Language, and Hearing Sciences and the NSCS program. Her community-centered research examines how bilingual language experiences shape learning, development, and access to opportunity for children and adults in multilingual and multicultural settings. Her interdisciplinary work is helping advance both clinical practice and our understanding of bilingual language and cognitive processes. We are proud to have Dr. Arizmendi as part of our NSCS community and thrilled to celebrate this well-deserved recognition! U of A students, this one’s for you! ⭐️ More than 68 million people in the U.S. speak a language other than English at home. If you’re heading into professions like medicine, speech-language pathology, nursing, psychology, or public health, multilingual practice is already part of your future. 🗣️ We are proud to introduce the Multilingual Clinical Learning Collaborative (MCLC). A new year-long training program for students who want to build real skills for working with multilingual and multicultural communities, and connect with peers who share your interests along the way. What you’ll do: three 1.5 hour workshops and one half-day session each semester. What you’ll gain: practical clinical skills, a growing professional network, real-world learning from Arizona experts, a certificate of program completion, and up to $500 for finishing the program. Who should apply: current undergrad, grad, or professional students with a 3.0 GPA or higher who are curious about multilingual healthcare and serving diverse communities. Apply by August 31, 2026. Last week, we celebrated our 2nd PUENTE graduating class and it filled our hearts in ways we’re still processing. This is what PUENTE is: community showing up for community and students who spent the year diving deep into the world of Speech, Language, and Hearing Sciences to discover the incredible ways language and communication show up in their own lives and communities. 🗣️ Our PUENTE grads are equipped with an understanding of how language, identities, and cultures can create opportunities in our communities. Our 2nd Cohort of PUENTE students from @desertviewsusd12 visited us at the University of Arizona last week! Our biggest cohort yet! 🤩🪅 PUENTE is our high school educational and outreach program for high school students to learn about introductory concepts in speech, language, and sciences, careers in speech-language pathology and audiology, while also learning important facts about bilingual development and transitions to higher education. 🧠 PUENTE students also heard from many voices on campus about the importance of building comunidad and exploring campus life. This is how we bridge communities, opportunities, and generations in our community. . You will be able to participate in a Speech, Language, and Hearing Sciences (SLHS) research lab in a paid position with a mentor, learning about normal and disordered processes of the five senses, balance, speech, and language. Labs include the Plante Lab, Language and Cognition Lab, Speech Acoustics and Physiology Lab, Vestibular Research Lab, and more! At Science Night yesterday, the BABEL Lab connected language, learning, and the brain to real pathways! 🧠 ✨ Our stellar team of undergraduate researchers ✨ @marianna.g.martinez @minhcraft_ and @ava.haga ✨ brought the science of bilingualism to life, showing local students in the borderlands how powerful it is to be bilingual and how their language already shapes how they learn, think, and communicate! They also made something clear 👉🏽 these skills are sorely needed in fields like speech-language pathology and audiology, where bilingual and bicultural professionals are underrepresented and too many communities like ours still lack access to care in their own language. 🗣️ This is how we build bridges.
