Carnival Postcards: Soundtracked By My Drums 🔊

Had these in the bank and never posted!!

Between Spice Mas, Crop Over, Caribana and generally just huge soca fetes happening recently, I’ve been inspired and reminded of the increasingly global nature of Caribbean carnival & music.

One of my favorite things about building community is seeing the relationships formed over the years come full circle.

This summer, friends, curators, and collectives from different cities are making their way to Tampa to share their music, culture, and energy with our community.

Up next, we welcome 4PM in Soweto for UBUSUKU 🌒

📍 Zodiac Nightclub
🗓️ July 11th

Presented as a special edition of Groove Nation, UBUSUKU is rooted in Afrobeats, Amapiano, Dancehall, and sounds from across the diaspora.

Free RSVP tickets and additional event information are available at the link in my bio.

Tampa, let’s keep building.

One thing I remember about this Carnival prep was how much I built up my stamina and endurance leading into it. I actually thought about it in terms of powerlifting and structured my drumming practice in “blocks”.

I.E; 2 months out I worked on general weaknesses, 1 month out I transitioned into playing groovy soca mixes, 2 weeks out I did power soca mixes (increased specificity) and 1 week out I “tapered” and let my body rest and recuperate.

I don’t powerlift anymore but it’s amazing how you can apply different philosophies to different crafts.

My only issue in hindsight was hydration 😩
