The “Clay for Cats” benefit last evening at @atacamaclaystudio was furrr-tastic! Over 20 artists created ceramic cat art to be auctioned off in support of 2 local cat rescue groups, @jccat_watch and @tinytigersnj, who do so much to help the cats of Jersey City and Hudson County with TNR and adoptions. We all enjoyed music by @christinesantelli123, delicious eats from @labodegajc and @ladoneriajc, drinks curated by @riverviewwinejc, and so much amazing art (the chess set was astounding and garnered top dollar in the live auction). I got outbid at all of my silent auction attempts, but I guess that meant more money for the cats!

‘Morning’ by @arlinacai on view now in ‘Drifting Through Time’ ✨

The paintings in this series began for Cai with a recent trip to the desert on the West Coast, where hours of flat, hot land with no end in sight let her mind settle and her thoughts come into focus. Living in New York, she’d forgotten what unstructured time felt like — an afternoon with nothing to do, an hour spent sitting still without guilt. The desert gave her back a sense of time as wide open and unhurried, spacious enough to notice what she’d normally move past too fast to see. Within that spaciousness, she found a soft landing for these works: a bloom of pink and pale green-gold barely holding its shape against raw, cream-colored canvas; a faint circular line becoming the only thing that gives way into a face, or a bud, or neither. Central to her practice is thinning pigment almost to water, directing it with movement that feels intuitive to her body, and then allowing it to settle. Each gesture is followed by a period of waiting, giving the pigment time to move and gather on its own before she decides what comes next. By giving the paint permission to spread at its own pace, Cai treats time as one of her materials.

On view now is a stunning duo exhibition of new work by @arlinacai and @moyanwang.art

In this show, Cai and Wang ask what a body, a landscape, or a memory looks like once it’s given time to unfold. Wang’s dense, coiling lines and Cai’s ephemeral washes both attest to the depiction of this inquiry. As a material, it can be used to soften a form, wind it into something more layered than it started as, or transform it entirely. ‘Drifting Through Time’ gives its viewers the same thing both Wang and Cai allow their materials: time enough to become something else.

The gallery is open Wednesday - Friday 1-6 PM and by appointment Saturday. The exhibition is on view through October 17.

Obsessed with this cutie by @arlinacai

Gossamer Traveler was the perfect work for this nook between a client’s card room and powder bath. Soft, subtle, and just enough color to tie the spaces together.

Cai’s paintings are rooted in emotion and inner experience, giving form to things that are felt more than explained.

most artists picture one buyer when they think about selling: a gallery, a collector, a red dot sticker.

the actual market is so much bigger than that, and most of it has nothing to do with a gallery wall.

ARIE Academy: Business of Art teaches you how to actually find and reach the people buying, not just hope they find you.

doors close tonight, this cohort won’t reopen. link in bio.

Thank you to everyone who joined us for the opening of ‘Drifting Through Time’ over the weekend! What an immense pleasure it was to have both @arlinacai and @moyanwang.art travel from afar to be in attendance ✨

In this exhibition, both artists focus on the act of slowing and allowing the materials they work with to coalesce on their own: oil paint settling and spreading, glaze left to oxidize, pigment bleeding into fabric until the edge of a form takes shape. Cai and Wang ask what a body, a landscape, or a memory looks like once it’s given time to unfold.

‘Drifting Through Time’ is on view through October 17th. It is a beautiful collection and we could not be more excited to introduce this work to our audience!

The gallery is open Wednesday - Friday, 1-6 PM and Saturdays by appointment.
