GEAR UPDATE - we now have 2 complete sets of vintage TODD AO Anamorphic lenses for rent. These are some of the rarest lenses out there. You will occasionally find mixed sets, but it’s uncommon to find complete sets of each generation. The first generation TODD AO Anamorphics use Cooke Speed Panchro and Kinetal primes as their base spherical lenses. TODD AO designed a new type of focus system for this series, that earned TODD AO’s Dr. Richard Vetter an Academy of Motion Picture Arts and Sciences Sci-Tech award in 1973. Their edge performance is quite good for vintage anamorphics. Flares are really special, barrel distortion is just the right amount, and bokeh has a lot of classic anamorphic texture. The lenses have internal focus, standard front diameters, and standard focus and iris gears.

The second generation of TODD AO use Canon K-35 spherical primes, and are often referred to as TODD AO “High Speeds.” They use an entirely different focus system: opting for the classic variable diopter approach. This allows the 35mm and 55mm to focus to an impressive 2’, which is unheard of for vintage anamorphic lenses. These are sharp in the center with heavy falloff. Wide Open, the look is quite unique and dreamy. Stopped down and they are more controlled. Flares are big and beautiful, bokeh is lovely, and they have moderate barrel distortion. They have been upgraded with @arma__cine Orbitals which allow the use of follow focus systems and standard 4x5 clamp-on matte boxes and give the lenses standard front diameters.

Yes, they are both TODD AO sets. But they are quite different. Both produce beautiful images, but they do it in different ways and give you different results. Test out both sets in our lens test studio to see which set might be right for your project.

The Angenieux 25-250 T3.9 is truly a special lens. With its warm flares, low contrast, and bokeh that resembles painting like characteristics, it brings a distinctive character to images — one that modern optics struggle to replicate.

Originally manufactured in 1962, it was the first 10X zoom lens ever made, and its release marked a turning point in cinema history. For decades, it served as a benchmark in the industry, earning a revered place in the cinematographer’s toolkit.

Though the telescoping and rotating front focus group eventually made it less practical in modern setups, Arma Cine’s Orbital system has revived its usability. The Orbital eliminates front rotation, allowing clamp-on matte boxes to be used, and adds support for focus motors — giving this vintage gem traction again.

Since this lens was designed for the Academy 35mm format (slightly smaller than Super 35), we recommend pairing it with our Century 1.4x Extender for full compatibility with today’s cinema cameras. This lens pairs well with our Leica R or Zeiss Super Speed sets, and we strongly encourage matching it with other lenses that share its unique personality and vintage character.

We are excited to announce another lens that we are able to offer thanks to our partnership with @bokehsommelier - The S16mm format Angenieux 15-300mm T5.4. It’s amazing what Angenieux was doing with zooms in the 1950-1970s. This one is no exception. This lens covers an incredible 20x zoom range, delivers a very sharp image, and does it in a lens that weighs only 5 pounds!

This lens is such a great choice if you need to cover a huge range, but need a compact lens. It’s perfect for doc work, especially day exterior, when you don’t need a super fast lens.

The lens has been upgraded with an @arma__cine Orbital system to make it matte box friendly, and TLS installed new focus, iris, and zoom gears, and a new PL mount. This lens is available now at Old Fast Glass.
