October 3rd of 2026 has come and gone. OYT#5 is over. THE MISSION ISN’T.

Nearly six years ago, it was ink on a tear-stained napkin at one of Tom’s memorial services after he lost his battle inside and outside the yellow tape of his mental wellness. Today, you wear it. You speak it. You LIVE it.

The messages you’ve sent since October 3rd remind me why we do this. The real work happens long after the chairs are empty. Long after the music stops. Long after the selfies, videos and tags are completed to remember an incredible day with incredible humans.

Here are some facts. Some of the life changing information those who attended shared with me.

Help spread the message and fuel the mission. Be the walking billboard. Someone behind you might need those words more than you’ll ever know. I’m wearing the #5 shirt in this video. Let me know if you’d like to order one or simply hit my website at KennyMitchellJr.com and place your order. Just add you would like the OYT#5 shirt in the comments. Of course the back reads …

“THERE ARE TOO MANY OF US TO EVER FEEL ALONE.”

October 2, 2027. We show up again.

Until then, keep opening the door. Keep checking on your people. Keep having the hard conversations. And when life gets heavy, remember that YOU deserve the same grace you give everyone else. Remember a room of nearly 200 people standing after seven questions because we all fluently speak the language of pain.

The room may clear. The music is over. The stage sits empty like every chair. We all drive home. The mission never stops.

We are OYT. We carry the message. We show up for each other. And we keep reminding the world that NONE OF US HAS TO FIGHT ALONE.

“THERE ARE TOO MANY OF US TO EVER FEEL ALONE.” -OYT

Thank you to everyone involved from the very bottom of my heart. I hope you’ll share this message to hopefully make it to those I want to thank. I hope to see you on October 2, 2027 at OYT#6. I truly hope I see you all before.

Haven’t done one of these in a long while! As fall approaches, I will start to use this technique for more due to cold rainy days, and being able to make reliable dry Tinder

LET’S PUT THIS TO REST. 😂

We can’t agree, so YOU get the final vote.

Who has the best hair?

Me (Fire Lieutenant)
Jason Redman (Navy SEAL Lieutenant)
Jenna (Nurse Practitioner)

The OYT Conference is serious about the mission but we laugh hard, have a lot of fun, and make room for the human side of all of this.

Because laughter is healing too.

So settle this years-long debate between myself and @jasonredmanww that @j.e.n.n.a.a.a.a.a.a just had to throw her hair in the hat.

Handrill today- thinking about one of my buddies. Missing him, and all the knowledge he imparted onto the community. Haven’t done one in a while so I had a few days of practice before I could crank out an ember.

I’ll remember this room for a long time.

Nearly 300 first responders standing together.

Not because I asked them to stand.

Because seven questions reminded them that they aren’t alone.

Thank you for trusting Operation Yellow Tape to kick off the 2026 First Responder Wellness Conference in Hampton, Virginia hosted by DCJS.

Last year, I had a small breakout room.

This year, I walked into a ballroom filled with nearly 300 people.

And somewhere between the first word and the last, something happened.

People connected.

People laughed.

People got uncomfortable.

People got honest.

And people remembered that the person sitting next to them might be carrying something they’ve never had the courage to say out loud.

We all fluently speak the language of pain. Inside and outside the yellow tape.

That’s why this work matters.

The keynote was powerful, but honestly, some of the most important moments happened after I stopped pacing the room and talking for 90 minutes.

In the hallway.

In quiet conversations.

In the people who pulled me aside and opened the door just a little.

Those are the moments I carry home.

Hampton, thank you for trusting me with your people.

Thank you for giving OYT a place at your table. Thank you for sending me home with new quality resources, friendships and culturally competent professionals to add to my tool box when the phone rings at 2:00am or the email drops in the middle of the day. I’m not the answer but I can get you in front of people that are.

And thank you for reminding me why I keep doing this. I’ve said this before. This is the hardest job I’ve ever done professionally. There are days that I feel like I’m beating my head against the wall. There are days that negativity sinks in from loud voices attempting to derail what I’m doing and adding why “they” think I’m doing it. Hate never comes from those doing more! OYT is SIX years old. About to turn SEVEN. I’m not new to this or late to the game. Not to mention over two decades spent wearing the gear. I’m going nowhere. Just getting louder.

There are too many of us to ever feel alone.

We are the too many.

I hope I’m standing in that room with you again in 2027.

Today, we Dropped the Shield.

Today, we hit mental wellness in the teeth.

We had the hard conversations. We opened the door. We talked about the things we don’t always want to talk about. We reminded each other that none of us have to carry it alone.

Thank you for the incredible conversation.

Thank you for showing up.
Thank you for sharing your stories.
And thank you for the resources that help people take the next step that I will add to the quality resources that I share when people contact Operation Yellow Tape.

This is how we change the culture.

Thank you Hampton, Virginia 2026 First Responders Wellness Conference for trusting the Operation Yellow Tape message to kick off this impactful three days.

Drop the shield.
Open the door.
Keep the conversation going.

This was a fun little self-imposed challenge I did upon myself. Splitting some poplar for feather sticks, carving said feathers, and then igniting with a ferro rod all done with a butter knife from the @buffalocovecamp camp kitchen 😂
