ARCHIVE 🔁 REVIEW pt.1

Almost a year ago, our design team conducted an internal design review of all printed materials produced for V–A–C / GES-2 between 2021 and 2024.

The review raised questions: What are the limits of the diagrammatic visual language? How does design imprints institutional transformations? Is there a basic “Diagrammatika”? Does the system require formal structuring, or does the language evolve organically on its own? etc.

NOW ✉️ PUBLISHING

V–A–C Press special edition for the exhibition Hesitation Marks (GES-2 House of Culture, 2025) includes artworks and a theoretical essay. The form and material of each of the six artifacts are prescribed by the artists’ concepts. Perforation serves as a unifying design solution that helps avoid direct design interference with the artworks. Cutting through text or image, the perforations embody the exhibition’s key themes: hesitation, pauses, and the need to de-automate perception. The number of perforations corresponds to the artifact’s assigned ordinal number.

The soft texture of Olin Design Rough Cream gives Horse a quiet, grounded presence—an ideal surface for a book that thinks deeply about systems and symbols.

As chess is reimagined as a form of communication, the paper itself becomes part of the dialogue: subtle, tactile, and intentional.

Printed on Olin Design Rough Cream, the interior of Horse sets the tone for a thoughtful and tactile reading experience.

Through considered design and subtle material choices, the book invites readers into a visual conversation— where chess becomes more than a game, transforming into a medium for storytelling and cultural exchange.

Chess as communication. Horse explores the game as a sign system—more than sport, a language of strategy and culture.

Designed with Olin Design Rough Cream, every detail reflects its depth and conceptual richness.
