We said goodbye to Tuxedo Ives this week. For nine years Tux has been running adventures on Felix Ave, ever since Anna rescued him from some punk teens trying to dunk him as a week-old kitten in a public pool in Hardy Ark. Since then he’s been stealing food from the kitchen, dumping in neighbors’ gardens and running wild in the streets at night. I can’t tell you how many times he came in looking for breakfast in the morning with a chewed ear, missing claws or an eye that wouldn’t open. I broke up multiple 3AM cartoon cat fights in my underwear in the middle of the street. He also loved wrestling plastic bags, chasing wrapping ribbons, messing with his (larger) sibling dogs Rox and Hal, and napping in closets, drawers, boxes and paper bags. And he loved a lap and a good scratch. Of course he gave as good as he got - which earned him the nickname The Claw (thanks Em).

He was known throughout the neighborhood for his good looks and macho strut. He was a fierce hunter who would leave mice, lizards, birds, rats, locusts and various other prey at the back door for us.

Tux also loved to wake us up at 5:30 every morning with a meow that became more like a howl as he got older, and he learned to do it next to our window for maximum excruciation. If inside he’d pound on the door with his paws until we got up. He learned early how to apply maximum leverage to get his way at all times.

He lived a good life.

Aron and I saw him out at the vet yesterday. He went out appropriately — with the fattest cat lip anyone has ever seen. We’ll miss him. Have a great time patrolling the streets in cat heaven, bud. I know ya will.
