Spottswoode: Napa Valley’s Quiet First Growth 🇺🇸

In Napa Valley, where power and prestige often define the narrative, Spottswoode Estate (@spottswoodewinery) offers a different perspective — one rooted in balance, restraint, and long-term stewardship.

In conversation with Beth (@spottswoode_ceo) and winemaker Aron Weinkauf (@aronweinkauf), one philosophy stands out: great wine begins with responsibility to the land.

🏡 St. Helena, Napa Valley Bench

Located on the western edge of Napa Valley, Spottswoode’s 17-hectare estate sits on the famed bench soils, known for producing Cabernet Sauvignon of structure and longevity. First planted in 1882, the vineyard today is a mosaic of 24 blocks, combining diversity of soils, clones, and rootstocks to shape wines of precision and nuance.

🌱 Stewardship Across Generations

From pioneering organic farming in 1985 to today’s biodynamic and regenerative practices, Spottswoode has consistently led by example. Under Beth’s leadership, sustainability extends beyond the vineyard — from solar energy and biodiversity to community-driven initiatives — redefining what a modern Napa estate can represent.

🍷 The Wines

Spottswoode Sauvignon Blanc 2024 – 92/100 DWA: Precise, textured and quietly complex, with citrus, white peach and a saline finish.

Lindenhurst Cabernet Sauvignon 2022 – 93/100 DWA: Polished, vibrant and accessible, balancing ripe fruit with freshness and structure.

Spottswoode Cabernet Sauvignon 2022 – 96/100 DWA: Poised, layered and built for longevity — a benchmark expression of the estate.

✨ Balance as a Guiding Principle

At Spottswoode, elegance is not an afterthought but a deliberate choice. The wines reflect a philosophy of restraint, vineyard transparency, and a long-term view — where consistency is built vintage by vintage.

Spottswoode 20yr Vertical, 2003-2022 🍷 An incredible tasting I felt really fortunate to be a part of!! Everything was tasted blind in two flights. 2006, 2007, and 2011 were my favorites in the first round, with 2016 and 2018 holding down the second. Thank you again!! ♥️

These 2 dogs have a serious job to do. Protecting a flock of 50+ sheep & goats from would be predators. Frosty, almost a year old Great Pyrenees & Timber, the year old Anatolian Shepherd.

Building a close connection with the dogs is a priority for the team who will care for them. One important thing we must remember is the dogs' first order of business is the care of their flock, to the possible point of ignoring the human handlers. Another point to consider is that dogs are on duty at night, so they must sleep & rest during the day. Training sessions are short, very rewarding & then done. #flockguardiandogs #workingdogs #dogsatwork #specializedworkers #positivedogtraining #dogtrainingsantarosa #sonomacountydogtraining #anatolianshepherddog #Greatpyreneesdog

Join us on Saturday, March 11th at 2:00pm PST for a special screening and live talk with Director Brian Lilla & Spottswoode Winemaker Aron Weinkauf at @cameocinema_napavalley.

Tickets may be found at the link in our bio.

Children Of The Vine is a deeply unsettling investigation into the controversial herbicide Roundup and its impact on public health.

From America’s heartland to here in California, award winning filmmaker Brian Lilla speaks with both farmers who depend on Roundup and those who are paying the ultimate price for spraying it.

Children Of The Vine highlights more sustainable farming practices that heal soil health, empower communities to shift away from toxic farming and advocate for organic land care practices.

“Whether at our estate, or with our grower partners, our goal is to work with Mother Nature, not against her,” says Spottswoode vineyard manager & winemaker Aron Weinkauf. Spottswoode’s 2021 Sauvignon Blanc & Lyndenhurst Cabernet Sauvignon are crafted with grapes cultivated in organic and biodynamically certified vineyards, as well as vineyards grown specifically for Spottswoode by family growers with whom the winery has forged strong, long-term relationships. Spottswoode might be best known for its famed Estate Cabernet Sauvignon, but this particular Cab has earned a faithful following for dynamic character and remarkable quality🍷

Napa Valley Trip- first stop was an absolute delight. We we were greeted by Winemaker Aron Weinkauf (@aronweinkauf) to see the facilities and taste a few wines from barrel. Then we were escorted down the block, through the Vineyards and on to the historic Spottswoode Estate by @mkshepp of Team Spottswoode! A peak into the basement cellar and a glimpse of a historical first bottling of Spottswoode (made my mentor Winemaker Tony Soter!)
