Two more pieces from my class at Arrowmont.
People learned at their own pace - and I taught them what they wanted to learn. Some were advanced and others were not. But I think everyone learned a lot - and definitely reached their goal of “I want to make something move!”. I hope that they will continue to learn. Heck, I’m still learning after almost 30 years of doing this. 💪🤓

I’m teaching an automata/kinetic sculpture class this week at Arrowmont. A great group of creative students and a lot accomplished in just 3 days. Yesterday I decided to have some fun myself. I don’t usually take time to play around and have fun. People suggested I call this piece “What’s the Point”, I’m okay with that. My assistant Jeff suggested adding the second hand after I added the first one. There see so many possibilities with this type of sculpture.
And I’ll show some student work tomorrow.

Every block print I create on fabric is heat set so I’m so really grateful to have a rotary iron in my studio. I have never loved ironing but my rotary iron is like the working version of sitting by a fire. It’s great for cold days!

I just dropped new products off at the Arrowmont gift shop gallery so be sure to stop in and see their new layout! They work really hard to make their artists’ work stand out!

Originally from Asheville, North Carolina, Deb Davis (@debdavis166) spent her career working in clinical laboratory medicine. Now based in Rutledge, Tennessee, she focuses on her art practice, creating handmade journals, wooden boxes, and mixed media collage. Her blank journals are pages waiting to be filled, art for the hand, the eye, or both. Her wooden boxes combine art, form, and function, carved from a single block of wood and finished by hand.

You can shop a variety of Deb’s books, boxes, and hand poured candles at both of our locations!

James Grimsley’s (@james.a.grimsley) interest in ceramics began in high school in Syracuse, New York, a curiosity that led him to study ceramics at Syracuse University. After completing his undergraduate degree, he was an Artist-in-Residence at Arrowmont, from 1999 to 2000, before going on to earn his MFA from the University of Georgia.

Jim’s ceramic practice carries an active energy, evident in a prolific body of functional pottery and regular participation in art festivals throughout the year. He currently lives and works in Bloomsburg, Pennsylvania, with his family.

You can shop these pieces and more at both of our locations!

Hello! Looms (@hello_looms), a business from Marianne Fairbanks and Erica Hess, are portable laser cut looms in a variety of sizes for quick, easy, and fun weaving. Weave with new textures and patterns on tablet sized loom, or make a tiny weaving on the smallest sized loom.

“Hello! Looms were developed to make weaving accessible. We do this by making small laser cut looms that are affordable, portable, and fun. The design is efficient, focusing on refined features such as the wooden needles, comb and integrated display stand. We support exploration and learning by using the loom to explore materials, colors, and patterns. Additionally, we steadfastly believe changing our focus from the fast paced, screen-focused world by engaging in weaving will connect our hands and mind, reconnect us to the pleasure of materials, and promote creativity.”

You can shop a variety of Hello! Looms at both of our locations. There’s something for everyone to weave!
