In 1960 Saddleback mountain opened up two T-bars and a handful of trails in Rangeley Maine. In the late 1950’s The Rangeley-Saddleback Corporation brought in a consultant from New Hampshire to evaluate the ski terrain and advise them on development. Even back then, hopes were high for Saddleback to become one of the premier resorts in New England. But early on the resort struggled to be financially viable. They were not able to get stable until the mid 1980’s and shortly after they did, the Rangeley-Saddleback Corporation ran into other troubles. From 1978 to the early 2000’s the resort went through financially crippling negotiations with the US government over eminent domain for the application trail. The mountain sold in 2001 and again in 2017 after closing theme doors in 2015. For the past five years the resort has been closed giving anyone crazy enough to hike up access to one of the best mountains in New England. It took about two hours to walk to the 4000+ foot summit and a little over twenty minutes to the bottom. He views were unreal and the snow even better. I look forward to going aback and doing this again before hey reopen this fall.

So this is the part of the year....wait decade, where we are supposed to look back and reminisce. Where we started, what we did, all the growth we went through, and blah blah blah. Here are a few images of the cast of characters from the Philly skate house where my decade began. 1- Me in an in and out burger out in California on what was my first production trip with Bowstring. 2- James was, and still is, a ripper, a can full of gnar. James is a best friend of mine from back home that some how I convinced to move out to Philly so we could skate. I guess we got jobs too but, it was really about skateboarding. 3- Gary up on the roof playing guitar. We had one of the best views of the skyline from our spot. I remember we made a janky ass ladder to get up there out of two 2x4’s and a bunch of old skateboards. At one point we had a break in and James raced out on the deck and then up onto the roof after someone, never caught them. 4- Ryan is one of my favorite people I have ever lived with. He was always a positive person and just had a crazy way of operating. He would stay up all night playing video games, doing yoga, riding his bike , and not doing homework. I remember him procrastinating like no other, Ryan would take 3 am bike rides to “wake himself up” while he was in the middle of a project due the next morning. 5- Basso moved in after Gary moved out. Mike is a good friend from back home that came out to Philly too. As I think about it, I don’t know if he had a job the whole time he lived with us. 6- Bryson was another friend I met in college. We had a big falling out in the early part of the decade over something real stupid but, I am so happy to say that we are back on good terms. He was a huge part of my life in Philly and a great friend.
