Ray Atkins Unseen last day showing at Mall Galleries open until 5pm

‘I work directly from the subject, trying to find harmony or maybe conflict of moments and events in the painting, with moments and events on the outside. This struggle is the source of energy in painting, and in this it is unique. The possibility of exact standards of truth which come out of this great thrill of the thing.’

Howard at Balham (Sitting by a Window), No. 2 (detail), 1967
Oil on board
183 x 122cm

People enter Atkins’ paintings as models, family, friends, and chance encounters.

His brother Howard, whom Atkins remembers as the only member of his family to show interest in or support for his work, sat for two quickly painted works in Balham.

Ken and Diane Playing Cards (detail), 1969

In Reading, Atkins painted his new partner Diane and their friends at home. One of these friends was the painter Ken Brazier, whose work he first encountered at the Slade as he lived with on Liverpool Road.

Atkins describes the strong impression made by the deep purples and rich reds of Brazier’s paintings. ‘Ken and Diane Playing Cards’, 1969, captures the two as they continue their game despite Atkins working nearby.

RAY ATKINS UNSEEN is now open at Mall Galleries 💫

Nearly fifty years after his landmark Whitechapel exhibition, RAY ATKINS UNSEEN reintroduces one of post-war Britain’s most distinctive yet under-recognised painters. Reuniting important paintings from Atkins’ formative decades, including works omitted from the 1974 exhibition curated by Frank Auerbach, it offers a fresh perspective on an artist whose unwavering commitment to direct observation places him within a tradition of post-war British figurative painting.

‘There was a whole run of paintings which were from the same period, 67, and I think they are some of my most intense and important work of the period but unfortunately Frank didn’t want to show them so they’ve never had a proper showing, I hope one day to do that!’ Ray Atkins

“EL PESO DEL ESPÍRITU” / “THE WEIGHT OF THE SPIRIT” - Oil on canvas, 146 x 114 cm. 2026

—————————
Sometimes, the intangible weighs more than what can be seen. At times, the spirit weighs more than the flesh, more than matter. We ourselves nurture what lies within us, that which has no form. To reach fullness and overflow from within 🌫️
