"PLAY AUBURN II: Auburn Central Recreational Park"

Located in the multicultural, high-density suburb of Auburn, Sydney, the Auburn Central Recreational Park and its research explores the public domain and social interactions as a basic needs. The project criticises the contemporary trend in urban developement practice where the built environment is prioritised over social life, leaving little to no opportunities for connections in the open public space. Identifying "play" as an instrument, and via research into the current literature, the project is an avant-garde interpretation of play, sport, and leisure space, bringing people together via common activities, painting a panorama of "life between buildings."

"AUBURN PLAY II: Auburn Central Recreational Park"
09/2024
For @art_instruments_publicspace @sydney_arch_design_planning

"PLAY AUBURN looks into the act of play as a means to create “Leisure City,” an opportunity to loosen up public space and allow for the emergence of new social complexities via participating in play. Auburn Central Recreational Park is designed as an artistic and playful space that invites people of all ages and groups to engage in physical activities while fostering social exchange and bonding, hence developing a sense of place and place attachment. Blurring the lines between art, play, and nature, creating a multi-functional environment where every element is sculpturally designed. The park encourages interaction, exploration, and enjoyment in a unique setting that serves as both a recreational hub and an artistic installation.

The park includes a skating plate, bouldering wall, water play area, and a listening cafe. All is connected via running tracks that wander through the site on canopy-height while meandering around a central lake.

Surrounded by lush vegetation and a tranquil water body, the park adds a green jewel to the area while inviting visitors to relax, reflect, or engage in group activities, providing space for communities’ events and celebrations. This environment fosters community, encourages shared experiences, and builds connections between visitors."
